Chapter 6 - The Discovery

The following morning, Arthur Vance arrived at my personal residence, where Maya was safely sleeping in her childhood bedroom. He looked refreshed, holding a thick folder filled with financial statements and bank disclosures that his team had unearthed during the night.
"Eleanor, we uncovered something far more sinister than simple domestic abuse and emotional manipulation," Arthur said, taking a seat in my study. "Ethan wasn't just living off Maya's trust fund. He was actively embezzling from it."
I froze, my coffee cup halfway to my lips. "What do you mean? The trust requires dual signatures for any withdrawal over five thousand dollars."
"He forged them," Arthur said flatly, sliding a series of documents across the desk. "He used his position as a financial analyst to create dummy corporations. He then transferred large sums of money from Maya's personal trust into these accounts under the guise of 'high-yield investments.' Over the past two years, he has systematically drained nearly four hundred thousand dollars."
My hands shook with a mixture of shock and cold, calculating fury. "Where did the money go, Arthur?"
"A large portion went to support his mother's lavish lifestyle—paying off her gambling debts at various casinos and funding her luxury apartment lease," Arthur explained. "The rest was used to maintain the illusion of his own wealth to his colleagues at the firm. He was buying expensive watches, country club memberships, and high-end tailor-made suits, all paid for by your daughter's inheritance while she was forced to scrub floors in a freezing kitchen."
"Does the firm know?" I asked, my voice deadly quiet.
"Not yet," Arthur smiled a slow, predatory smile. "But they will by nine o'clock this morning. I have already scheduled a meeting with the managing partners of his firm. Embezzlement, forgery, and grand larceny are felony offenses. This is no longer just a messy divorce, Eleanor. This is a criminal prosecution."
Just then, Maya walked into the study, dressed in a warm, comfortable sweater, her hair brushed and her face looking more vibrant than it had in years. She had overheard the last part of the conversation.
"I want to go with you, Arthur," she said, her voice steady and resolute.
I stood up, concerned. "Maya, you don't have to face them. You need to rest, to heal."
May you like
"No, Mom," Maya said, looking me directly in the eyes. The fearful girl from the night before was gone, replaced by a woman who had finally found her fire. "I spent two years staying silent because I was afraid of making a scene. Ethan stole my money, my dignity, and my peace. I want to be there when he realizes he has lost everything."
Arthur looked at her with immense respect, nodding slowly. "Then get your coat, my dear. Let's go watch a kingdom fall."
