Chapter 8 - The Tables Turn

"Your house?" Roberto laughed hysterically, though the sound was laced with sheer panic. He turned wildly toward Commander Morales. "Officer, look at him! He's delusional! This property is registered under Inversiones Del Mar S.A. de C.V., a corporation legally registered in my name!"

Commander Morales didn't even blink. He pulled out a secondary document and unfolded it with slow, deliberate precision.

"And under the federal emergency maritime lien filed through the Panamanian consular office and countersigned by the federal magistrate this morning," Morales read aloud, "all corporate assets acquired through the systematic misappropriation of international maritime remittance funds are hereby placed under direct receivership of the federal court, with primary restitution rights assigned exclusively to Señor Gabriel Sánchez and his immediate dependents."

Morales looked up from the paper, fixing Roberto with a cold, unyielding stare.

"In simple terms, Señor Sánchez: your corporation is a criminal front. Every vehicle, every bank account, every square meter of land, and every brick of this estate legally reverts back to the primary victim. That’s him."

Roberto’s knees buckled slightly. He reached out and grabbed the edge of the kitchen island to steady himself, his mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water. All the arrogant bluster, all the smug, untouchable swagger he had displayed just days ago on the patio, had completely evaporated. He looked like a cornered animal realizing the cage door had finally slammed shut.

"You can't do this," Roberto whispered, his voice cracking. "We're brothers. We're family."

"Family?" I stepped right up to him, my voice dropping to a quiet, lethal hiss. "Where was your sense of family when you watched my wife starve behind these walls? Where was your sense of family when you threatened to have state authorities steal my son away? You ceased being my brother the moment you decided to prey on the people I left behind to protect."

Sofia burst into hysterical tears, rushing toward Roberto and grabbing his arm. "Roberto! What did you do? What did you do with all those accounts? You told me everything was legal! You told me we were safe!"

"Shut up, Sofia!" Roberto snapped, pushing her away in a blind panic.

Commander Morales gestured to two federal agents. "Escort these individuals off the premises immediately. They have twenty minutes to collect their personal clothing and effects under supervision. Any attempt to remove corporate assets, electronics, or valuables will result in immediate arrest for obstruction of justice."

As the federal officers moved in and firmly guided Roberto and Sofia toward the front door, Roberto cast one last, venomous look over his shoulder at me.

"You haven't won, Gabriel," he hissed through clenched teeth as he was led out the door. "You’ll never make it work without me! The permits, the taxes, the local municipal bribes—you don't know how to run any of it! You'll lose it all within a month!"

"Watch me," I replied quietly.

The heavy front door clicked shut. The mansion fell silent, save for the hum of the refrigerator and the gentle footsteps of federal agents cataloging the remaining rooms upstairs.

Valeria walked up beside me, slipping her small hand into mine. Her fingers were warm now—no longer ice-cold with fear. She looked around the grand, sunlit kitchen, then down at Mateo, who was quietly exploring the open space with wide, wondering eyes.

"Is this really ours now, Gabriel?" she asked softly.

I wrapped my arm around her shoulders, pulling her close against my side.

"It was always yours, Valeria," I whispered, pressing a kiss into her tangled hair. "And this time, I’m not going back to sea. I’m staying right here where I belong."
