Chapter 10 - The True Treasure

One warm Friday evening, exactly four months after I walked through that back gate and found my world shattered in the dirt, I sat on the wide stone patio behind our house.
The air smelled like wet grass, blooming jasmine, and the savory aroma of chicken sizzling on the outdoor grill.
Mateo—now running around with healthy pink cheeks, a bright blue T-shirt, and sneakers that actually fit him—was chasing a soccer ball across the emerald-green lawn, his infectious laughter ringing out into the twilight sky.
Valeria walked out through the sliding glass door, carrying a tray of fresh lemonade and two tall glasses filled with ice. She wore a simple yellow sundress, her hair flowing freely over her shoulders, radiant and glowing with a vibrant happiness I hadn't seen since the day we were married.
She set the tray down on the wooden table, walked over to where I was sitting, and wrapped her arms around my neck from behind, pressing her cheek against mine.
"Dinner’s almost ready, Captain," she murmured with a soft, playful smile, echoing the title my old shipmates used to use.
I reached up, pulled her hands down into mine, and turned around to pull her gently onto my lap. She laughed softly, resting her head against my shoulder as we watched our son kick the soccer ball across the grass.
"You know," I said, looking out over the wide, peaceful yard, the glowing windows of our home, and the quiet Zapopan evening stretching out before us, "for three years, I thought the most important thing in the world was building a house and stacking up money in a bank account."
Valeria tilted her head up, looking into my eyes with a tender, knowing expression. "And what do you think now?"
I reached out and gently brushed a strand of hair away from her face, tracing the soft contour of her cheek.

"I learned that a house is just bricks and mortar, and money is just numbers on a screen," I said softly, my voice filled with profound peace. "The only true treasure I ever needed was right here all along. And I’m never leaving it behind again."
Valeria smiled, leaning in to press her lips softly against mine as the sun dipped slowly below the western horizon, painting the sky in brilliant shades of gold and amber—a horizon we would watch together, every single day, for the rest of our lives.
