Chapter 6 - The Gathering Storm Clouds

Over the next thirty-six hours, the cheap motel room turned into a high-stakes command center.
Valeria slept in fitful bursts, her body finally beginning to relax now that she knew we weren't alone and that someone was fighting back. Mateo slept deeply, the dark circles under his eyes slowly beginning to fade as proper meals and a safe, warm environment worked their quiet magic.
Captain Vance didn't sleep at all. Operating from his office in London, he mobilized a network of international maritime attorneys, forensic accountants, and federal investigators in Mexico City who specialized in white-collar financial crimes and corruption.
By Sunday evening, the legal trap was fully set.
"Everything is locked and loaded," Vance’s voice crackled over the motel room speakerphone late Sunday night. "The federal magistrate in Mexico City has signed off on the emergency injunction and asset freeze. Federal investigators are currently dispatching executive seizure notices to all commercial banks tied to Inversiones Del Mar. Furthermore, because your brother utilized funds originating from international maritime labor contracts under false pretenses, the federal financial crimes unit has classified this as an aggravated fraud investigation."
I stood by the window, peering through the cracked blinds out at the quiet Zapopan street below. "What about the local police? Roberto has several precinct commanders on his payroll."
"They’ve been neutralized," Vance replied smoothly. "The federal injunction supersedes local municipal authority. Federal agents from the Attorney General’s office will be executing the seizure orders directly, accompanied by federal police escorts who answer to Mexico City, not local precinct bosses. Your brother’s local bribes won't buy him an inch of protection this time."
"And the house?" Valeria asked, stepping up beside me, her eyes reflecting the dim glow of the streetlamp outside. "The house he built with Gabriel’s money?"
"It’s listed as the primary physical asset under the fraudulent corporate portfolio," Vance said. "Which means under federal asset forfeiture laws, the entire property—including the vehicles, the land, and everything inside—is being seized by the state pending final restitution rulings. In plain English, my dear: your brother is about to lose his precious empire."
"Good," Valeria whispered, her jaw tightening. "Let him feel what it’s like to have everything ripped away in a single second."
May you like
"There’s one more thing," Vance added, his tone turning serious. "Tomorrow morning at precisely 9:00 AM, federal agents will serve the seizure notice at the mansion. I strongly suggest you and your wife are present, Gabriel. Not just to witness the dismantling of your brother’s little empire, but to ensure that your legal rights as the primary victim and rightful owner are officially recorded on the premises."
"We’ll be there," I said.
