Chapter 7 - The Collapse of the Syndicate

The federal agents moved with terrifying efficiency. Handcuffs clicked sharply against the polished mahogany table as Richard Vance and two complicit board members were hauled to their feet.

Victoria stood frozen behind her chair, her power suit looking entirely too large for her suddenly shaking frame. She looked around the room, desperately seeking support from the other executives, but every single board member was staring fixedly at their hands or the floor, too terrified to even breathe too loudly.

“You can't do this to me,” Victoria hissed as two agents stepped toward her. “I am a Vance! My family built this city!”

“Your family built their fortune on stolen goods and blood money,” Nathaniel said coldly, not even sparing her a glance as she was led away in handcuffs. “And your time is up.”

As the heavy oak doors closed behind the arrested executives, the remaining board members sat in stunned, absolute silence.

Nathaniel turned to the room, his dark eyes sweeping over every single person seated at the table.

“The restructuring of Graves Holdings is complete,” Nathaniel announced, his voice echoing off the glass walls. “Effective immediately, fifty percent of all voting shares are being transferred into a trust held exclusively by my daughter, Ruby Graves, and my wife, Clara Miller.”

Gasps echoed around the room. A veteran board member raised a trembling hand. “Mr. Graves… a child holding voting shares? That’s unprecedented.”

“Then consider it a new precedent,” Nathaniel replied smoothly. He reached over and placed his hand gently on my shoulder. “Ruby showed more integrity when she was eight years old, starving on a bus, than any of you have shown in your entire corporate careers. She returned what wasn't hers. She upheld her honor when no one was watching. That is the kind of leadership this company needs.”

I looked up at my father, my heart swelling with a warmth I had never felt before. The frightened little girl standing in the lobby of Graves Tower just hours ago felt like a distant memory.

“Meeting adjourned,” Nathaniel said.

Within minutes, the boardroom cleared out, leaving only Nathaniel, Mom, and me.

Mom walked over to Nathaniel, her eyes shining with unshed tears. She reached out and touched his cheek, her fingers tracing the familiar lines of his face. “You really didn't change, did you? You’re still the most stubborn, dramatic man I’ve ever met.”

Nathaniel caught her hand, kissing her knuckles tenderly. “I spent twelve years looking for you, Clara. I’ll spend the next hundred making up for lost time.”

“Well,” Mom said with a small, watery smile, “we have a lot of shopping to do. Ruby needs clothes, and I need to learn how to live in a castle.”

“You won't be doing it alone,” Nathaniel smiled, wrapping his arm around my mother’s waist and pulling me into his side.
