Chapter 6 - The Boardroom Coup

The mahogany boardroom on the top floor of Graves Tower was packed to capacity. Sunlight poured through the floor-to-ceiling glass windows, illuminating the grim faces of the city’s most powerful executives, bankers, and syndicate leaders.

At the head of the long table sat Victoria Vance, wearing a sharp white power suit, a triumphant smirk playing on her lips. Beside her sat her uncle, Richard Vance, a ruthless corporate raider who controlled half the shipping lanes on the East Coast.

The heavy oak doors swung open.

Absolute silence fell over the room.

Nathaniel walked in with slow, measured strides. Clinging to his left hand was me, dressed in a tailored navy blazer and pleated skirt, while my mother walked on his right, her posture straight and resolute. Marcus and four armed guards flanked the entrance, sealing the exits behind them.

Victoria stood up, adjusting her jacket. “Nathaniel. I’m surprised you decided to grace us with your presence. Especially considering the board is currently reviewing Article Nine of the corporate charter—the removal of a Chief Executive due to erratic behavior and the introduction of unverified, unauthorized heirs.”

Murmurs of agreement rippled through the table. Richard Vance leaned back in his leather chair, crossing his arms with a smug grin. “Let’s be reasonable, Graves. You’ve lost your touch. Bringing some street brat off the pavement and calling her your daughter to bypass corporate protocol is financial suicide. Sign the restructuring papers, step down as chairman, and we’ll allow you to retire quietly.”

Nathaniel didn't raise his voice. He didn't slam his fist on the table. Instead, he pulled out the chair at the absolute head of the table, gently seated me, and then sat down beside me, lacing his fingers together.

“Richard,” Nathaniel said, his voice slicing through the tense air like a razor blade. “You always were an ambitious fool. You think because I spent twelve years looking for the woman I love that I grew weak?”

“You’re a liability,” Richard snapped, slamming his hand on the table. “Vote now, board members! All in favor of stripping Nathaniel Graves of his executive authority, raise your hands!”

Three board members hesitantly raised their hands. Victoria smiled wider.

“That’s three,” Nathaniel said calmly. He turned to Marcus. “Bring in the files.”

Marcus stepped forward and dropped thick, heavy manila folders onto the table in front of each board member.

“Take a look,” Nathaniel instructed softly. “Page four of the supplementary files details the embezzlement of corporate funds through the Vance shipping subsidiaries over the past four years. Page nine outlines offshore bank accounts registered in the Cayman Islands under Richard Vance’s name. And the final document…”

Nathaniel paused, locking eyes with a pale, sweating Richard Vance.

“…is a federal indictment warrant signed this morning by the district attorney, courtesy of evidence provided directly by Graves Holdings.”

The color drained entirely from Richard’s face. He snatched up the papers, his hands shaking violently as he flipped through the pages. “This… this is fabricated! You can't do this!”

“I am the law in this city, Richard,” Nathaniel whispered, standing up slowly. He leaned over the table, towering over Victoria and her uncle. “And my daughter didn't just find a wallet twelve years ago. She found the exact leverage I needed to clean house.”

Victoria leaped to her feet, her face contorted in rage. “You can't arrest us! We own half this board!”

“Not anymore,” a calm voice echoed from the doorway.

The side doors opened, and a team of federal agents, led by the Chief of Police himself, marched into the room.
