Chapter 5 - The Gathering Storm

Victoria’s threat hung in the air long after the door clicked shut behind her. My heart hammered against my ribs, but beneath the fear, a strange spark of anger ignited. I wasn't just the poor girl from Fourteenth Street anymore. I was a Graves.

Before I could dwell on her warning, the door opened again—this time softly.

Nathaniel walked in, looking exhausted. He knelt beside my chair, his dark eyes searching my face. “Did Victoria come in here?”

I nodded slowly. “She told me… she told me she would destroy me and Mom.”

Nathaniel’s jaw clenched so tightly I thought his teeth might crack. He reached out and placed his large, warm hand over my small one. “She won't lay a finger on you, Ruby. I built this empire from the ground up, and no one—least of all Victoria—dictates who belongs in my family.”

He stood up and offered me his hand. “Your mother is downstairs. She’s arrived.”

My breath caught. “Mom is here?”

“Marcus brought her and all your belongings just as I ordered,” Nathaniel said gently. “Come.”

We walked down the grand staircase and into the sprawling, sunlit conservatory. Standing in the middle of the room, looking utterly bewildered and out of place among the towering potted palms and glass walls, was my mother.

She wore her faded laundry uniform, her hair tied back in a loose bun, and her hands were nervously clutching the straps of her worn canvas purse. When she saw me walk down the stairs holding Nathaniel’s hand, she stopped dead in her tracks.

“Ruby?” she whispered, her voice trembling. She looked from me to Nathaniel, her face draining of color. “Nathaniel… what is the meaning of this? Where are we?”

“You’re home, Clara,” Nathaniel said softly, stepping forward.

“Home?” Tears spilled over my mother’s eyelashes, tracking down her cheeks. “You disappeared twelve years ago without a word! You left me to raise our child in poverty while you ruled this city like a king! And now you just—you just abduct us?”

“I didn't abduct anyone, Clara,” Nathaniel said, his voice laced with deep, enduring pain. “I searched for you every single day. If I had known you were struggling, if I had known about Ruby… nothing on earth could have kept me away.”

Mom looked at me, kneeling down and pulling me into a fierce, suffocating embrace. She buried her face in my neck, sobbing softly. “Oh, my baby… are you okay? Did he hurt you?”

“No, Mom,” I whispered, hugging her back. “He’s… he’s my dad. And we don't have to worry about the rent anymore.”

Mom pulled back, looking at Nathaniel with a mix of fury, fear, and long-buried love. Before she could speak, however, the heavy double doors of the conservatory burst open.

Marcus strode in, his face grim, holding a glowing tablet in his hand.

“Boss,” Marcus said, not even looking at my mother or me. “We have a serious problem. Victoria has just contacted her father’s faction. They’re mobilizing the board members. They’re calling an emergency vote to freeze your personal assets under the clause of 'mental incapacity due to unrecognized familial dependents.'”

Nathaniel’s expression turned into something terrifying. The mafia boss had awakened.
