Chapter 10 - The Horizon

One year later, the estate on the cliffs looked entirely different.
The heavy, intimidating iron gates had been replaced with wrought-iron railings woven with climbing white roses. The dark, museum-like rooms inside had been brightened with soft fabrics, family photographs, and the sound of genuine laughter echoing down the hallways.
Today was my ninth birthday—my first real birthday celebration in a home filled with love, security, and peace.
The lawn overlooking the ocean was filled with tables, flowers, and friends from my new school, as well as trusted colleagues who had helped rebuild Graves Holdings into a beacon of legitimate business and philanthropy.
I stood on the balcony of the grand estate, looking out over the sparkling blue ocean.
Footsteps approached softly behind me, and a familiar leather wallet was gently placed into my hands.
I turned around to see Nathaniel smiling down at me, his silver hair catching the golden afternoon sunlight. Beside him stood Mom, holding a small cake topped with glowing candles.
“Do you still carry that around?” I asked, looking down at the worn leather case.
“Every single day,” Nathaniel answered softly, wrapping his arm around my shoulders. “It reminds me of the best day of my life—the day my daughter walked into my office and changed my world forever.”
Mom stepped forward, her eyes shining with happiness. “Make a wish, Ruby.”

I looked at my father, then at my mother, and finally out at the vast, open horizon where the ocean met the sky. I didn't need to wish for anything. The girl who once stood on Aldridge Street with a pink eviction notice and a heavy heart was gone. In her place was a girl who knew her worth, surrounded by a family that would protect her to the ends of the earth.
I blew out the candles, and as the smoke drifted up into the warm afternoon air, I knew our happily ever after was only just beginning.
