Chapter 9 - REBUILDING THE EMPIRE

The weeks following the fairgrounds incident brought a profound transformation to Rhode Island's underworld.
With Frankie Moretti neutralized and the internal traitors purged from the Romano syndicate, the streets of Providence stabilized. The local police department, purged of its corrupt elements through quiet pressure and strategic document leaks orchestrated by Vincent, returned to a semblance of order.
At the Romano estate, life took on a rhythm that felt surprisingly warm and domestic.
Chloe didn't return to her cramped apartment. Instead, Gabriel had quietly settled her into a beautifully renovated guesthouse on the estate overlooking the bay, ensuring her safety while giving her space to breathe. But she spent most of her days in the main house, helping Elena with her schoolwork, sharing meals with Gabriel and Dante, and learning the intricate, complex machinery of how the Romano family managed their legitimate business enterprises—shipping, real estate, and historic restoration.
One afternoon, Chloe sat on the expansive stone patio overlooking Narragansett Bay, reading a book while Elena practiced her piano inside the sunroom. The gentle sound of classical notes drifted out through the open French doors, mixing with the salty ocean breeze.
Gabriel stepped out onto the patio, holding two glasses of iced lemonade. He handed one to Chloe, sitting down in the chair beside her.
"You've adjusted remarkably well," Gabriel observed, watching her with a subtle, appreciative smile. "Most people would still be hiding under the bed after what you went through."
"Most people don't get adopted by the shadow king of Rhode Island," Chloe joked lightly, taking a sip of the lemonade.
Gabriel chuckled, a genuine, warm sound that rarely surfaced around syndicate business. "Shadow king sounds entirely too dramatic. Let's call it... a family enterprise with very strict security."
"How are things with the docks?" Chloe asked, turning serious.
"Quiet," Gabriel replied, his gaze drifting out toward the water where cargo ships moved slowly toward the port. "Moretti's successors in Boston sent a formal emissary last week. They understand the new terms. Providence is off-limits, and the Romano name is untouchable."

He turned back to her, his pale eyes softening. "And more importantly... Elena hasn't had a single nightmare in three weeks. She smiles, she plays, she acts like a normal eight-year-old again. And that is entirely because of you, Chloe."
Chloe felt a sudden warmth in her chest. For the first time since she had grabbed Elena’s hand at the fairgrounds, she felt completely, undeniably at home.
