Chapter 8 - DAWN OVER PROVIDENCE

The first rays of golden sunlight broke over the Providence skyline, washing the historic brick buildings, state house dome, and Narragansett Bay in a warm, amber glow. The violence and chaos of the night before felt like a lifetime away.

Back at the Romano estate on the Point—now fully secured and swept clean of all threats—the atmosphere was peaceful.

Chloe sat in the sprawling, sunlit kitchen overlooking the bay, holding a steaming mug of black coffee. The terror of the fairgrounds, the chase through the diner, and the shootout at the warehouse felt like a fever dream.

Footsteps padded softly across the hardwood floor.

Elena walked into the kitchen, wearing a fresh set of clothes, her green eyes bright and clear, completely free of the dark shadows of fear she had carried the night before. She climbed onto the stool next to Chloe without a word and reached for a glass of orange juice.

"Did you sleep?" Chloe asked softly.

Elena nodded, taking a small sip. "Like a rock. Dad said the bad men are gone."

"Your dad is a very powerful man," Chloe said with a gentle smile.

"He's just my dad," Elena replied simply, swinging her legs back and forth. Then she turned her head and looked straight at Chloe. "He told me something this morning."

"What did he say?"

"He said that people who save my life don't just walk away. He said you have a home here now, for as long as you want it."

Before Chloe could formulate a response, Gabriel walked into the kitchen. He had changed into a fresh, crisp white dress shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his forearms, looking less like a syndicate boss and more like an exhausted, devoted father. He set a plate of pancakes in front of Elena, ruffled her dark hair affectionately, and then poured himself a cup of coffee.

He pulled out the chair opposite Chloe and sat down, studying her with those piercing, intelligent eyes.

"You saved my daughter's life, Chloe," Gabriel began, his tone serious and unwavering. "You risked everything in that amusement park, and you stood your ground when every instinct told you to run. You showed more courage than half the men on my payroll."

"I just did what anyone should have done," Chloe replied honestly.

"In this city? No, Miss Vance. Most people look the other way," Gabriel said softly. "I don't leave debts unpaid. Your old life—your apartment, your bookstore job—it's gone. Not because of my enemies, but because you are marked now as part of my circle. But I promise you this: under my protection, nobody will ever lay a hand on you again."

Chloe looked from Gabriel to Elena, who was smiling brightly over her breakfast. She realized the terrifying, chaotic night had fundamentally rewritten her destiny. She wasn't just a bystander anymore. She had stepped through the looking glass into the shadows of Providence—and she had found a family where she least expected it.
