Chapter 10 - THE TRUE MEANING OF FAMILY

Six months later, the autumn leaves turned deep shades of amber and crimson across Federal Hill and the coastal cliffs of Newport.
It was Elena’s ninth birthday.
The Romano estate was filled with laughter, music, and bright lights. There were no armed guards standing visibly at the gates tonight—only trusted friends, business associates who knew better than to cross the family, and people who genuinely loved the little girl who had survived the darkest night of her life.
Inside the grand dining room, a massive chocolate cake sat on the table surrounded by glowing candles.
Elena stood at the center, taking a deep breath before blowing out every single candle in one mighty puff as the room erupted into cheers and applause.
As guests gathered around to hand out gifts, Elena walked straight over to Chloe, holding a small, neatly wrapped box tied with a bright red ribbon.
"Open it," Elena insisted with a wide, excited grin.
Chloe smiled, carefully untying the ribbon and lifting the lid. Inside rested a delicate, beautifully crafted silver charm bracelet. Hanging from the center was a small silver key and a tiny emerald gemstone that matched Elena’s eyes.
"My dad helped me pick it out," Elena whispered proudly. "The key is for the estate gates, and the emerald is because you're part of us now."
Chloe felt a lump form in her throat. She looked up and saw Gabriel standing a few feet away, leaning against the doorway with his hands in his pockets, watching them with a quiet, undeniable warmth in his eyes.
He walked over, kneeling beside Elena and placing a gentle hand on her shoulder. He looked directly at Chloe, his voice steady, carrying the quiet weight of a promise that could never be broken.
"When you pulled my daughter away from the gunfire that night, Chloe, you didn't just save a child," Gabriel said softly, the noise of the party fading into the background. "You brought light back into a house that had been living in the dark for too long. You are not a guest here. You are family, today, tomorrow, and always."
May you like
Chloe slipped the silver bracelet onto her wrist, the cool metal resting comfortably against her skin. She looked at the little girl who had once whispered Don't call anyone, and then at the dangerous, protective man who ruled the shadows of Rhode Island.
The nightmare at the fairgrounds was long gone, replaced by something far more enduring. She had walked into the darkness looking for safety, and she had found a home.
