Chapter 4 - THE EMPEROR OF THE PROVIDENCE UNDERWORLD

Gabriel Romano did not look like a man who had just lost his empire.

He wore a tailored charcoal suit that fit his lean, athletic frame with terrifying precision. His hair was dark, peppered with silver at the temples, and his face looked like it had been chiseled out of granite by a sculptor who only worked in angles and shadows. But it was his eyes—pale, piercing, and utterly devoid of fear—that commanded the room.

The moment the car door opened, Elena didn't walk; she ran.

The cold, composed little girl vanished in an instant, replaced by a terrified child who threw her arms around her father’s waist and buried her face in his jacket. Gabriel caught her instantly, dropping to one knee with a sharp intake of breath. He wrapped his long arms around her small frame, burying his face in her hair. For a long, silent moment, the ruthless emperor of the Rhode Island underworld simply held his daughter like she was the only anchor keeping him tethered to humanity.

"I've got you," Gabriel whispered, his voice thick with an emotion he rarely showed the world. "I've got you, Elena. You're safe."

Chloe stood by the car door, feeling entirely out of place, like a ghost haunting someone else’s tragedy. She crossed her arms tightly against the chill, ready to slip back into the shadows and disappear.

Gabriel stood up, keeping Elena firmly cradled against his shoulder. He turned his piercing gaze toward Chloe.

"Miss Vance," he said, his voice echoing off the damp brick walls.

"Mr. Romano," Chloe managed to reply, trying to keep her voice steady. "I... I just brought her out of the fairgrounds. I'll take my leave now. You don't have to worry about me talking. I didn't see anything."

Gabriel took two slow steps toward her, the rubber soles of his shoes making no sound on the concrete. Dante flanked his left side, while the two guards stood watch near the bulkhead door.

"Running away is a very dangerous sport in Providence tonight, Miss Vance," Gabriel said quietly. "Especially when you are the only person outside my inner circle who knows that my daughter was targeted from within."

Chloe’s heart skipped a beat. "I told you, I don't want any part of this. Just let me go home."

"Home?" Gabriel gave a bitter, humorless smile. "Do you think your apartment is safe? Do you think the men who hunted my daughter through a crowded amusement park won't check traffic cameras to see who she left with?"

The words hung in the damp air like a falling blade. Chloe realized he was right. Her quiet life, her bookstore job, her cozy apartment—they were already gone. By saving Elena, she had tethered her fate to the most dangerous man in New England.

Elena pulled back from her father’s shoulder, her green eyes fixed on Chloe. "Don't let her go, Dad. She didn't have to run with me. She could have left me by the ticket booth, but she didn't."

Gabriel looked down at his daughter, then back at Chloe. A strange shift occurred in his expression—not softening, exactly, but hardening into a profound sense of obligation.

"My enemies know you were with her," Gabriel said, his tone absolute. "In our world, survival requires loyalty, and loyalty is paid in blood and protection. From this moment on, you are under my roof. You are family."
