Chapter 4 - A Meeting of Minds

Arthur Vale sat behind a massive mahogany desk on the top floor of the Vale Fidelity Tower. The panoramic view of the metropolis stretched out before him, a sprawling labyrinth of steel, glass, and human ambition.

A soft chime sounded on his desk intercom.

“Mr. Vale,” his executive assistant, Clara, announced. “You have a visitor in the private lounge. She insisted on seeing you without an appointment.”

“Who is it, Clara?”

“Her name is Elena Moroz, sir. She says she brought coffee.”

Arthur’s stern, weathered features softened into a genuine smile. “Send her right in.”

A minute later, the heavy oak doors opened. Lena walked in carrying a cardboard tray holding two cups of coffee from the small bakery down the street—the same bakery where she used to buy Maya a single pastry on special occasions. She was dressed neatly in a tailored blazer, her posture upright and confident.

“I hope you take it black, Mr. Vale,” Lena said, placing a cup on his desk. “Or at least, I assumed you did based on the terrifying aura you give off.”

Arthur chuckled, a deep, resonant sound. He picked up the cup and took a sip. “It’s perfect, Lena. And please, call me Arthur. How are you and Maya settling in?”

“We’re wonderful,” Lena replied, sitting in the leather chair opposite him. “Maya started back at school this morning. She told her teacher she has a castle now. But... I didn't come here just to thank you again, Arthur.”

Arthur raised an eyebrow, setting his coffee down. “Go on.”

“I received the building deed yesterday,” she said, her voice steady. “And I also received a confidential notice from the city planning board. Marcus Halloway is trying a desperate legal maneuver. He’s filing a frivolous injunction against your bank’s asset transfers, claiming your intervention was a targeted corporate strike rather than a response to fraud.”

Arthur’s expression turned cold. “Halloway doesn't know when to quit. He thinks a wounded animal can still bite.”

“He thinks you’re an untouchable billionaire who operates above the law,” Lena said leanly. “And he’s right about the billionaire part, but you operate on a code of honor. Halloway is trying to paint your defense of me as an abuse of corporate power. If he manages to drag this into a protracted public relations battle, it could hurt the bank’s charity initiatives.”

Arthur stared at her, genuinely impressed. The exhausted, broken woman he had met on a marble bank bench days ago had transformed into a sharp, strategic thinker.

“And what do you propose, Lena?” Arthur asked, resting his chin on his hands.

“We don't fight him in the courts with lawyers,” Lena smiled faintly. “We fight him with the people he tried to step on.”
