Chapter 9 - The Final Chapter

The divorce was finalized on a crisp October morning. I walked out of the courthouse, the crisp air hitting my face, and took a deep breath.

I had everything I needed. My career was thriving, Lily was flourishing, and for the first time in my adult life, I had no one to please but myself and my daughter.

I looked at my phone. A message from Priya: Drinks tonight?

I looked at Lily, who was busy trying to catch a leaf falling from a maple tree. She caught it, grinned at me, and ran over to show me.

"Look, Mom! I caught it!"

"That's amazing," I said.

I knew then that I didn't need to look back. I wasn't defined by the lie he lived, and I certainly wasn't defined by the space he left behind.
