Chapter 4 - The Aftermath

When Thomas walked into the house at 7:30 PM, the silence wasn't just physical; it was deafening. He called out my name. Then he called for Lily.

He found the note, of course. I hadn’t left a long, emotional letter. I simply left a copy of the travel confirmation to Greece, the credit card statements showing the dinner at Helios Cove, and a brief message: I know. I’ve taken Lily. You’ll hear from my attorney.

He tried to call. He tried to email. He even reached out to Priya, who promptly blocked him on my behalf. For the first two weeks, he was a man in a blender, spiraling. He filed a missing persons report, which was quickly dismissed by the local police once my lawyer provided proof that I had reached out to initiate divorce proceedings and that Lily was safe with family.

He was frantic, not because he missed me, but because he missed his lifestyle. He missed the convenience. He missed the version of himself that looked like a successful family man.

I spent those two weeks in Seattle, watching Lily play in the damp, green woods of my sister’s property. She didn't ask much about her father. It was as if she had sensed the tension in the house for years and was relieved to finally be out from under its weight. She was happier, clearer, and more present.

I realized then that I hadn't just left a marriage; I had rescued my daughter from a performative life.
