Chapter 5 - The Legal Battlefield

The divorce was not quiet. Thomas, fueled by a mixture of bruised ego and entitlement, fought for custody, claiming I had "kidnapped" our daughter.

Alannah was a fortress. She presented the evidence of his infidelity not as a moral failing—which the courts often ignore—but as a pattern of behavior that indicated a lack of domestic stability. We showed his business expenses, the lavish trips, and his consistent neglect of parental duties.

But the turning point was the testimony of our neighbors and the school records. I had kept a meticulous log of everything I did for Lily. Thomas couldn't even name her pediatrician or the name of her teacher.

During the depositions, he tried to play the role of the devoted father. He wore expensive suits and spoke in a voice that was practiced and smooth. But when I sat across from him, I didn't see the man I had married. I saw a stranger, someone who thought he could buy his way back into a life he had discarded.

I didn't blink. I didn't cry. I was the person I had been in that kitchen—the one who understood the reality of the situation.
