Chapter 7 - Tearing Down the Legacy

Eleanor sneered, attempting to maintain her regal demeanor. "Remove me? I am Eleanor Vance. I am the matriarch of this family. You cannot strip me of my status, Marcus."

"Watch me," I said quietly.

I turned to Victoria, who handed me a fresh stack of legal notices. I placed them on the table right in front of my mother.

"As the sole trustee and primary owner of Vance Enterprises and the Vance Family Estate," I announced, "I am revoking your residency rights at Vance Manor effective immediately. You have forty-eight hours to pack your personal belongings and vacate the premises."

Eleanor gasped, taking a step back as if she had been slapped. "You are kicking your own mother out of her home?"

"This is my home, inherited from Dad," I replied without an ounce of pity. "Additionally, I am removing you from the Board of Directors of the Vance Charity Foundation. An audit has already been launched into every financial transaction you approved over the last decade. If we find a single dollar misallocated, I will personally press charges against you."

"Marcus! You wouldn't dare!" Eleanor’s voice shook with genuine panic for the first time. "I am your mother!"

"A mother protects her child's happiness," I said, looking back at Evelyn, who was standing near the doorway, holding Leo and Noah tightly in her arms. "A mother doesn't destroy her son's family out of classist arrogance and greed. You stole six years of my sons' lives. You made them sleep in airport terminals while you lived in luxury. You are no mother to me."

Eleanor stood frozen, her eyes wide with shock and fury, as I turned my back on her.

"Come on," I said softly to Evelyn, walking over to her and taking Noah into my arms while holding Leo’s small hand. "Let's go home."

We walked out of Vance Manor, leaving Eleanor standing alone in the massive, echoing grand foyer—surrounded by marble and gold, but completely bankrupt of love.

Over the next three months, the truth tore through the upper echelons of Chicago society like a wildfire. Harrison Sterling was formally indicted on multiple felony counts of fraud, forgery, and embezzlement. Facing decades in prison, Sterling cooperated with prosecutors, turning over internal emails and recorded phone conversations that exposed Eleanor’s full involvement in coercing Evelyn and orchestrating the forgery scheme.

While Eleanor managed to avoid prison time due to a plea arrangement handled by her high-priced defense lawyers, her social standing was utterly destroyed. Stripped of her board positions, evicted from Vance Manor, and publicly exposed in the media as a ruthless matriarch who had weaponized fraud against her own grandchildren, she moved away to a isolated property in Europe, abandoned by the elite social circles she had spent her life trying to impress.

Meanwhile, I made sweeping changes to my business. I restructured the executive board of Vance Enterprises, stepping back from the frantic, workaholic lifestyle that had consumed me for a decade. I promoted Arthur to Chief Executive Officer of the hospitality division, keeping only my role as Chairman so I could dedicate my time to what truly mattered.
