Chapter 4 - The Forged Signature

I stared at the document on my monitor screen, my heart hammering against my ribs.
The document was dated September 14, six years ago. On that exact date, I had been in Frankfurt, Germany, finalizing the blueprints for our luxury resort chain. I had not been anywhere near Chicago. I had never seen this document in my life, yet my signature was written clearly across the bottom of the page, complete with a notarized seal from Harrison Sterling’s law firm.
"Marcus?" Evelyn called out softly, seeing the pale, rigid look on my face. "What is it?"
"Look at this," I said, turning the monitor toward her.
Evelyn walked over and looked at the document. Her eyes widened as she read the terms. "This... this is the agreement your mother made me sign. It says I agreed to surrender all parental notification rights in exchange for a fifty-thousand-dollar settlement... which I never even received."
"Look at the signature on the right," I said, pointing to the line.
She read the name: Marcus Vance. She looked up at me, bewildered. "You signed this? But... you told me you didn't know!"
"I didn't know!" I said firmly, grabbing her hands. "Evelyn, look at the date. September 14th. I was in Frankfurt. I have passport stamps, flight records, and hotel receipts proving I was six thousand miles away on that day! I never saw this paper, I never authorized this agreement, and I certainly never signed it!"
Evelyn gasped. "Then how is your signature on it?"
"My mother and Harrison Sterling forged it," I realized, the horrifying truth settling into my mind. "They used my power of attorney—which I had given Sterling for routine corporate contracts while I was overseas—to sign a fraudulent legal contract in my name! They didn't just coerce you; they committed major legal fraud using my identity to rip my family apart!"
A cold, calculating clarity washed over me. For years, I had allowed my mother to influence my business decisions, believing she was acting in the best interest of our legacy. I had respected Harrison Sterling as a trusted family advisor who had served my late father for decades. They were not guardians of our legacy; they were ruthless manipulators who thought they could play with human lives like chess pieces.
"They thought they got away with it," I said quietly, my voice laced with steel. "They thought you would disappear forever, and that I would remain their obedient corporate soldier."
"What are you going to do?" Evelyn asked, a hint of fear in her voice. "Harrison Sterling is one of the most powerful lawyers in the state, Marcus. And your mother... she has connections everywhere."
"They may have power, but they committed a federal crime," I said, closing the laptop with a firm snap. "They forged my signature on an illegal coercion contract. They hid my children from me. And today, Eleanor Vance invited us to the estate to 'discuss this in private.'"
"You're not actually going there, are you?"
"Oh, I am going," I replied, looking toward the hallway where my sons were sleeping peacefully. "We are all going. But not to negotiate. We are going to demand answers—and I am going to tear down their lies piece by piece."
I picked up my phone and called a private investigative and legal auditing firm I had secretly retained years ago for corporate due diligence.
"David," I said when the investigator answered. "I need an emergency forensic audit of all legal filings executed under my Power of Attorney by Harrison Sterling between six and seven years ago. And get me a handwriting analyst on standby immediately."

"Consider it done, Mr. Vance," David replied.
I turned back to Evelyn. "Get some sleep, Evelyn. Tomorrow morning, the Vance family history changes forever."
