Chapter 5 - Confrontation at Vance Manor

The next morning, the morning mist hung heavy over the gates of Vance Manor, a grand, gated estate situated on a thirty-acre property along the North Shore of Lake Michigan.

I drove my SUV through the wrought-iron gates, with Evelyn sitting in the passenger seat and Leo and Noah buckled safely in the back. The boys were quietly mesmerized by the massive stone driveway and the grand fountain in front of the mansion.

"Is this a castle, Daddy?" Leo asked, looking out the window.

It was the first time he had called me 'Daddy.' The word vibrated through my soul, filling me with a sudden, unbreakable resolve.

"It's just a big house, buddy," I said, reaching back to touch his cheek gently. "And we won't be staying here long."

I parked the car in front of the sweeping marble staircase. I got out, opened the doors for Evelyn and the boys, and led them up the steps. I didn't knock. I used my key, pushing open the heavy mahogany doors.

The grand foyer was dead silent, save for the ticking of a grandfather clock in the corner. Standing near the fireplace in the main drawing room was Eleanor Vance, dressed impeccably in a dark navy tailored suit, holding a cup of tea. Beside her stood Harrison Sterling, a silver-haired man in a bespoke three-piece suit, holding a leather briefcase.

When we walked in, Eleanor set her teacup down with a quiet clink. Her sharp eyes darted from me to Evelyn, and then finally to the two small boys standing beside us. For a fraction of a second, I saw a flicker of shock in her eyes as she recognized the undeniable Vance traits in the twins' faces. But she quickly masked it with cold indifference.

"Marcus," Eleanor said smoothly. "You brought them into my house."

"It's my house, Mother," I corrected her coldly, taking a step forward. " Dad left this estate to me in his trust. You only live here because I allow it."

Harrison Sterling cleared his throat, taking a step forward with an air of legal superiority. "Marcus, let's keep this civil. Your mother and I understand that this... discovery is emotional for you. But we need to handle this matter discreetly to protect the reputation of Vance Enterprises."

"Discreetly?" I let out a dry, bitter laugh. "Is that what you call blackmail, legal fraud, and forgery, Harrison?"

Harrison’s expression tightened slightly, though he maintained his suave composure. "I don't know what you're referring to."

I pulled a printed stack of documents from my inner coat jacket and tossed them onto the glass coffee table between us. The top document was the executed Non-Disclosure and Severance Agreement bearing my forged signature.

"September 14th, six years ago," I said, pointing at the paper. "I was in Frankfurt attending the European Hotel Summit. Yet my signature appears on a document forcing Evelyn to give up her rights and leave the state under threat of financial ruin. Care to explain how my signature got on that paper, Harrison?"

Harrison glanced down at the paper, his jaw tightening slightly, but he didn't flinch. "You gave me full Power of Attorney, Marcus. As your legal counsel, I acted within my authority to protect your estate from predatory individuals."

"Predatory?" Evelyn spoke up, her voice ringing clear and strong across the room. "I was a woman who loved your son! I was pregnant with his children! You threatened my sick brother, you threatened my mother's home, and you forced me into hiding!"

"You were a nobody!" Eleanor snapped, her icy composure finally cracking into visible venom. "You were a low-level charity coordinator trying to anchor yourself to a fortune that took three generations to build! You didn't belong here, Evelyn! You never did!"

"They are my sons, Eleanor!" I roared, stepping between my mother and Evelyn, my voice echoing off the high ceilings. "They carry my blood! They carry Dad's eyes! And you treated them like trash to be discarded because you couldn't control who I loved!"

"I did what had to be done for this family!" Eleanor shouted back, her eyes ablaze with arrogance. "Look at you! You built an empire because you weren't burdened by a low-class family! You owe your success to my stewardship!"

"No," I said, my voice dropping to a terrifyingly calm level. "I built my empire despite your cruelty. And your stewardship ends today."
