Chapter 6 - The Unraveling of Eleanor Vance

Harrison Sterling raised a hand, attempting to de-escalate the situation. "Marcus, please. Think rationally. If this document gets out, if the public finds out about this agreement, the fallout will ruin Vance Enterprises' stock value. Investors will pull out. The board will lose confidence in you. We can settle this internally. We can create a generous trust fund for the boys— quietly."
"Quietly?" I stared at Harrison with utter contempt. "You think you can buy off six years of stolen fatherhood with a trust fund?"
"It is the only sensible way forward," Harrison insisted smoothly. "Furthermore, the statute of limitations on civil fraud for that contract is dangerously close to expiring. A court legal battle will drag on for years and destroy everyone involved."
"That's where you're wrong, Harrison," a voice called out from the foyer.
Everyone turned. Walking into the drawing room was David, my private investigator, accompanied by two uniformed officers from the Cook County Sheriff’s Department and a sharply dressed woman carrying a leather briefcase—Victoria Chen, one of the most prominent white-collar criminal defense and corporate litigation attorneys in the state.
Harrison’s face drained of color. "What is the meaning of this?"
"Harrison Sterling," Victoria Chen announced, stepping forward with an authoritative stride. "I am representing Marcus Vance and Evelyn Reed. Two hours ago, we submitted a formal criminal complaint to the State Attorney’s Office regarding identity theft, legal forgery, and extortion."
"This is absurd!" Harrison snapped, stepping back. "I acted under a valid Power of Attorney!"
"A Power of Attorney does not grant legal authorization to commit forgery or contract coercion under false pretenses," Victoria countered calmly. "Furthermore, Mr. Vance’s private audit team conducted a rapid forensic review of the Aegis Holding Trust records this morning. We discovered that the fifty-thousand-dollar settlement fee listed in Evelyn Reed’s forged agreement was never transferred to her. Instead, it was funneled directly into a private offshore account owned by a shell company registered to your firm."
Harrison froze. His eyes darted nervously toward Eleanor.
"You embezzled money from the family trust under the guise of paying off my girlfriend?" I asked, staring at Harrison in utter disbelief.
"Marcus, listen to me—" Harrison stammered, his polished arrogance completely dissolving.
"Save it for the prosecutor," Victoria said coldly.
The two sheriff's deputies stepped forward. "Harrison Sterling, you are under arrest for corporate fraud, forgery, and grand larceny. You have the right to remain silent..."
As the deputies handcuffed Harrison Sterling and led him out of the mansion, he turned to Eleanor with a desperate look. "Eleanor! Do something! You authorized this!"
"I authorized nothing," Eleanor said smoothly, turning her back on him completely. "Mr. Sterling acted independently as our legal counsel. The family had no knowledge of his financial improprieties."
I stared at my mother, sickened by how easily she threw her lifelong accomplice under the bus to save herself.
"Is that your strategy, Mother?" I asked. "Blame Harrison for everything?"

Eleanor turned to face me, pulling herself up with rigid pride. "Harrison was corrupt. I may have been harsh, Marcus, but everything I ever did was to preserve the Vance name. You cannot arrest me for wanting the best for my son."
"No," I said, stepping closer to her. "I can't arrest you for being heartless. But I can remove you from my life, and from this family forever."
