Chapter 4 - The Reality Check

Across the street, the confrontation between the police officer and Ryan was a masterclass in swift deflation.
From my vantage point on the second-floor balcony, watching through the lens of a high-powered spotting scope, I saw Ryan's animated gestures turn into stunned disbelief. The officer spoke to him for a few minutes, pointing firmly toward the rental house and then gesturing away from our estate.
Vivian shrieked something, waving her cane in the air, but the officer simply climbed back into his cruiser, leaving them standing alone in the dark under the flickering amber glow of the neighborhood streetlamps.
"They're going to try to break in, aren't they?" Margaret asked softly, walking up behind me and wrapping a warm shawl around her shoulders. She looked down at the street with lingering fear.
"They won't get past the perimeter," I assured her, turning away from the balcony and pulling her into a gentle hug. "Mom, listen to me. For seven years, they made you feel small because they thought they held all the cards. They thought my money was our money, and that I was just an accessory to their comfort. Tonight, the illusion ends."
"What are you going to do?" Margaret asked, looking into my eyes.
"Everything," I replied. "Tomorrow morning, my legal team is filing for divorce, full custody of the twins, and a permanent restraining order against both Ryan and Vivian. At the same time, my corporate auditors are going to seize every single asset I ever loaned, gifted, or funded for Ryan."
The next morning broke crisp and clear. The sunlight poured through the floor-to-ceiling windows of The Grandview Estate, illuminating a breakfast table laden with fresh fruit, pastries, and artisanal coffee. Oliver and Emma were happily playing in the enclosed sunroom, chasing a mechanical puppy while giggling uncontrollably.
At precisely 8:30 AM, a sleek black town car pulled up to the gates of our estate.
It wasn't a police car, and it wasn't Ryan. It was Marcus Vance, my senior corporate attorney and managing partner at Vance & Associates Law Firm.
I pressed the gate release, and Marcus walked up the limestone path, wearing a sharp charcoal suit and carrying a heavy leather briefcase. He had been my right-hand man since the early days of Apex Global, and he knew every detail of my personal and financial life.
"Good morning, Elena," Marcus said, tipping his hat as I met him on the front porch. "I received your encrypted transmission last night. It sounds like the circus has finally caught fire."
"Good morning, Marcus," I replied, leading him into the study overlooking the front gardens. "It’s worse than a circus. It’s a liability. Let’s sit down."
We settled into the leather armchairs by the fireplace. Margaret brought in a tray of coffee, and Marcus politely thanked her before opening his briefcase and laying out a stack of crisp legal documents.
"Let's review the assets," Marcus said, adjusting his gold-rimmed glasses. "As per your instructions last night, I’ve already frozen all corporate-linked personal accounts, subsidiary credit lines, and vehicle leases associated with Ryan Miller."
"What about the luxury SUV he drives?" I asked.
"Reclaimed this morning at 6:00 AM by our repossession team," Marcus said with a faint, satisfied smile. "It's currently parked in your secondary garage. His corporate credit card has been permanently deactivated, and his membership at the country club has been cancelled due to non-payment of dues, since the automatic billing was tied to your corporate account."
I crossed my legs, feeling a deep, long-overdue sense of empowerment. "And the house across the street?"
"The residential lease is held under Apex Holdings," Marcus explained, flipping a page. "Since you are the sole director, I served an official notice of lease termination at 7:00 AM today. They have forty-eight hours to vacate the premises. If they remain past that window, local law enforcement will execute a standard writ of possession."
"Good," I said coldly. "And the divorce papers?"
Marcus slid a thick document across the polished mahogany desk. Petition for Dissolution of Marriage, Sole Custody, and Asset Clawback.
"Everything is drafted according to your specifications," Marcus said. "Given that Ryan has no independent income, no verifiable employment for the past three years, and clear evidence of domestic abuse against an elderly dependent residing in his household, we have a ironclad case for zero alimony and full custody."
Just as Marcus finished speaking, my phone buzzed on the desk.
It was an incoming call from an unknown number.

I hit speakerphone and placed it on the desk.
"Elena! Pick up the phone, you insane bitch!" Ryan’s voice blared through the speaker, frantic, furious, and dripping with desperation. "What do you mean our cards are declined? What do you mean the car was towed? My mother is having a panic attack because the electricity is still off, and I can't even buy a cup of coffee!"
