Chapter 3 - The Awakening of the Estate

The interior of The Grandview Estate was a sanctuary of peace compared to the chaos we had just escaped. While Oliver and Emma explored the plush velvet rug with wide, curious eyes, I set to work turning this fortress into a home for my family.
"Mom, let me look at that arm," I said, fetching a first-aid kit from the master suite upstairs.
As I gently applied a soothing arnica cream to the deep purple bruises on Margaret’s forearm, she looked around the master-crafted kitchen with its professional-grade stainless steel appliances and marble countertops.
"Is there food here, sweetheart?" Margaret asked hesitantly. "I didn't get to finish cooking Vivian's roast beef..."
"Forget the roast beef, Mom," I smiled softly, pulling open the Sub-Zero refrigerator. It was fully stocked with fresh organic produce, gourmet meals, and artisan cheeses, automatically replenished through my automated delivery subscription. "Tonight, we are having something easy. And tomorrow, we start fresh."
Within twenty minutes, I had prepared a warm bowl of chicken soup for my mother and simple, wholesome meals for the twins. Watching my babies eat happily in the breakfast nook, away from the toxic shouting of across the street, a profound sense of relief washed over me. But that relief was immediately paired with a fierce, burning resolve.
My phone, a secondary secure device that wasn't tied to the family plan Ryan used, buzzed on the kitchen island.
It was an alert from my home security network across the street.
I tapped the screen and brought up the high-definition perimeter camera feed. Ryan and Vivian were standing on the driveway, illuminated by the flashing lights of a local police cruiser. They had managed to use a neighbor's landline to call the authorities.
"Look at them," I murmured, watching the live video feed.
On screen, Ryan was gesturing wildly toward my mansion, talking to a police officer. I could read his lips: “My wife has gone insane, she locked us out of our house, she kidnapped our children, and she’s squatting in a property that isn't hers!”
The police officer nodded, looking skeptical, and then walked across the street, heading straight toward the grand iron gates of The Grandview Estate.
"Mom, finish your soup," I said calmly. "We have visitors."
I walked out to the front porch just as the officer reached the gate. He pressed the intercom button, looking up at the high-definition security dome with a frown.
"Property management, local law enforcement," the officer said firmly through the speaker. "Open the gate. We’ve received a complaint regarding unlawful entry and custodial interference."
I pressed the unlock button on my phone, and the pedestrian gate clicked open. The officer walked up the path, his hand resting cautiously near his belt, but his expression softened immediately when he saw me standing gracefully in a silk robe, sipping a cup of chamomile tea.
"Good evening, Officer," I said politely. "I assume my soon-to-be-ex-husband sent you?"
The officer blinked, glancing around the impeccably maintained grounds before looking back at me. "Ma'am, Mr. Ryan Miller claims you forced your way into private property and took your children without consent. He also claims you locked him out of his residence."
I set my teacup down on a marble side table and retrieved a slim leather folio from the foyer console.
"Officer, my name is Elena Miller. This estate is registered under my legal maiden name and corporate holding entity, Apex Global LLC, of which I am the sole owner and CEO." I handed him a neatly printed deed and certified property title. "Here is the title proving this property has been fully paid for and owned by me for three years. Furthermore, I am the legal mother and primary guardian of Oliver and Emma Miller."
The officer opened the folder, scanned the legal documents with practiced efficiency, and raised his eyebrows. "Ah. This is your property."
"Completely," I replied smoothly. "As for the house across the street—the one Mr. Miller is currently standing outside of—that property is leased under a residential agreement in my corporate name. Furthermore, I have terminated the lease effective immediately due to chronic lease violations and safety hazards."
The officer handed the folder back, a faint smirk playing on the corners of his mouth. He had clearly dealt with domestic disputes before, and the disparity between Ryan’s frantic claims and my absolute legal footing was glaring.
"Well, Mrs. Miller," the officer said, clearing his throat. "Mr. Miller stated that you locked him out and cut his utilities. Technically, civil tenancy disputes require a formal eviction process, but since the lease is in your corporate name..."
"The lease allows for immediate termination in cases of structural endangerment and domestic violence," I interrupted, my voice steady and unyielding. "My mother, who resides with us part-time, was physically assaulted on that property this afternoon. I have medical documentation and photographs of her injuries, which I will be filing with the precinct tomorrow morning along with a restraining order against Ryan Miller and Vivian Miller."
The officer's demeanor shifted instantly from professional detachment to genuine concern. "Assault, ma'am? Did you call an ambulance?"
May you like
"I removed her from immediate danger," I said. "And I will be filing the formal charges tomorrow. If Mr. Miller attempts to harass us or breach this property line, I expect your department to enforce the trespass warning immediately."
The officer nodded firmly. "Understood, Mrs. Miller. I'll go back across the street and inform Mr. Miller of his legal boundaries. If he causes any more trouble, call us directly."
