Chapter 7 - A New Foundation

The transition into their new normal wasn't without its challenges, but every hurdle they faced together only served to strengthen the bond that Gideon was determined never to neglect again.

To help Maya and Toby process the trauma of the past, Gideon had enlisted the help of Dr. Elena Vance, one of Seattle’s leading child psychologists. Twice a week, Elena would visit their home, engaging Maya in play therapy and gentle conversations designed to replace the lingering fear of the dark with a sense of absolute security.

On a crisp Tuesday afternoon, Gideon sat in his new home office, reviewing a draft of a charitable foundation he was setting up in memory of his late first wife—a foundation dedicated to supporting single-parent households and providing resources for abused and neglected children.

A soft knock interrupted his thoughts.

The door pushed open a few inches, and Maya peered in, her oversized hoodie replaced by a bright yellow sweater that made her look full of life.

"Daddy? Are you busy?" she asked softly, hesitating on the threshold.

Gideon instantly closed his laptop, standing up and walking over to the door with a welcoming smile. "Never too busy for you, sweetheart. Come on in. What's going on?"

Maya walked in, holding a worn-out paperback book. "Toby is taking his afternoon nap, but I finished my homework early. Can we... can we read together? In the big living room?"

"I would love nothing more," Gideon said, taking her hand.

They walked out into the sunlit living room, sitting side by side on the plush cream-colored sofa. As Maya opened the book and began reading aloud—her voice steady, confident, and completely free of the trembling hesitation of months past—Gideon looked around the room.

The shelves were filled with family photographs taken over the past few weeks: candid shots of them baking cookies in the kitchen (resulting in a flour-covered disaster), messy afternoons at the local park, and smiling selfies taken during a weekend trip to the Cascade Mountains.

There was no trace of the cold, distant billionaire he used to be. He was simply Dad.

And as Maya stumbled over a difficult word and looked up at him for help, Gideon smiled, supplying the word gently before wrapping his arm around her shoulders. The scars of the past would take time to fade entirely, but the foundation they were building now was unbreakable, rooted in unconditional love, constant presence, and a promise that was never going to be broken again.
