Chapter 1 - The Illusion of Perfection

For most of his adult life, Gideon Mercer believed he had created the ideal family.

From the outside, no one would have questioned it.

His luxurious home stood in one of Seattle's wealthiest neighborhoods, surrounded by towering evergreens and elegant estates worth millions. Floor-to-ceiling windows glowed warmly each evening, giving the impression of a home filled with love.

Business magazines celebrated his success.

Clients admired his determination.

Friends often said he had everything a man could want.

What no one saw...

Was how easily success can disguise neglect.

Gideon convinced himself that providing financially was the same as being emotionally present.

The endless overseas flights.

The late-night meetings.

The weekends sacrificed to business deals.

He called them necessary.

He believed elite schools, trust funds, and expensive birthday gifts proved he was a devoted father.

It was a comforting lie.

Because believing it meant he never had to face everything he was missing.

His daughter, Maya, had recently turned eight.

She was quiet, thoughtful, and noticed far more than most adults gave her credit for.

Her little brother, Toby, had only recently begun speaking, yet he instinctively reached for anyone who made him feel protected.

Gideon loved both of his children.

But too often, his affection arrived in gift bags from airports, hurried breakfasts before another flight, and familiar promises.

"I'll make it up to you next time."

Two years after losing his first wife, Gideon married Isla.

She seemed like the perfect partner.

Elegant.

Composed.

Charming.

She appeared to manage their household effortlessly while Gideon focused on expanding his company.

Everyone congratulated him.

Friends insisted she'd restored happiness to a family broken by tragedy.

He believed them.

It made every business trip easier to justify.

The Night Everything ChangedThe evening that shattered his illusion began like countless others.

A steady drizzle followed Gideon's car as he pulled into the driveway shortly after midnight.

The house was dark.

Completely silent.

He quietly unlocked the front door, hoping not to wake anyone.

His briefcase rested beside the console table.

He loosened his tie and stood still for a moment.

Something didn't feel right.

The silence wasn't peaceful.

It felt abandoned.

Cold.

As though the warmth had quietly disappeared long before he arrived home.

Then...

A tiny voice drifted through the darkness.

So soft it barely reached him.

"Please..."

"We'll be good..."

"Please don't be angry anymore..."

Gideon froze.

He recognized the voice immediately.

Maya.

His pulse quickened.

Without making a sound, he began walking down the hallway.

Every step felt heavier than the last.

The voice grew clearer.

Then he turned the corner...

And what he saw waiting there shattered every illusion he had about the family he thought he knew.
