Chapter 5 - Dawn of Reckoning

The first pale rays of grey Seattle dawn began to break over Lake Washington, casting long, muted shadows across the polished glass and steel of Mercer Enterprises. Inside the executive lounge, Maya had finally fallen asleep, curled up next to her brother with her small head resting on Gideon’s thigh. Gideon hadn't moved an inch for three hours, sitting rigidly in the leather armchair, running his fingers gently through his daughter's hair while watching the city wake up below.

At 6:15 AM, his phone buzzed quietly against the wooden side table.

It was a text message from Marcus Vance: We are inside the house. Police and child services are securing the master suite now. Isla is awake and throwing a fit, claiming you staged this. Get down here. Judge Harrison signed the emergency custody and restraining orders twenty minutes ago.

Gideon looked down at his sleeping children. He gently eased his leg out from under Maya, replacing it with a rolled-up plush cushion so she wouldn't wake, and stood up. He walked over to the glass door, checking on them one last time before stepping out into the main office.

His phone rang immediately. It was Marcus calling directly.

"Talk to me," Gideon answered, his voice icy.

"We're inside the master suite, Gideon," Marcus said, the sound of muffled shouting echoing in the background over the phone line. "You weren't exaggerating. We found a secondary lock installed on the outside of the children’s bedroom doors, controlled by a digital keypad linked directly to Isla's phone. We also found financial records on her personal tablet showing she’s been siphoning funds from your joint corporate charity account into an offshore account in the Caymans."

Gideon’s jaw tightened. "What about the kids' rooms?"

"Child services documented the lack of basic amenities, the cold temperatures, and medical staff are currently examining the physical bruising on Maya's arm," Marcus replied grimly. "She's completely finished, Gideon. Between child endangerment, financial fraud, and abuse, she's looking at serious prison time. Where are you?"

"I'm on my way down. Keep her there. Do not let her leave under any circumstances."

Gideon hung up, grabbed his overcoat, and strode out of the office.

Thirty minutes later, his black SUV pulled into the circular driveway of his Laurelhurst estate. The scene outside looked like a crime drama. Two marked police cruisers were parked near the grand double doors, their emergency lights flashing a dull red against the grey morning drizzle. A city social services van stood idling in the drive.

As Gideon stepped out of the car, the heavy front door swung open. Two police officers escorted Isla down the marble steps.

She looked entirely different from the composed, elegant woman Gideon had kissed goodbye before business trips. Her hair was disheveled, her designer silk robe clutched tightly around her, and her face twisted in a mask of furious, hysterical disbelief.

"Gideon! You cowardly bastard!" Isla screamed as she caught sight of him approaching up the walk. "You think you can just fabricate these lies and throw me out? This is my home too! Those ungrateful brats made everything up!"

Gideon stopped a few feet away from her, his expression completely blank, devoid of the anger she expected. He looked at her not with rage, but with a cold, chilling indifference that hit her harder than any shout could have.

"You had access to everything, Isla," Gideon said quietly, his voice cutting cleanly through her screaming. "All the wealth, all the security, all the freedom in the world. And you chose to torture two defenseless children who never did a single thing to you."

"They were in my way!" Isla shrieked, losing whatever composure she had left as the female police officer gently cuffed her wrists behind her back. "You were never here! You cared more about your stupid company than your own family! I just put them in their place!"

"And now," Gideon replied, stepping past her toward the open doorway, "you'll spend the rest of your life figuring out what a real prison looks like."

As they bundled her into the back of the cruiser, Gideon didn't look back. He walked into the house, signaling the cleanup crew to strip every trace of her existence from the premises. The illusion was gone. Now, it was time to rebuild.
