Chapter 4 - The Safe Haven of the Office

The elevator doors chimed softly as they slid open on the forty-second floor of Mercer Enterprises. The sprawling downtown Seattle office was completely deserted at two in the morning, save for the faint hum of the HVAC system and the sprawling panoramic view of the glittering city skyline reflecting off the floor-to-ceiling glass windows.
Gideon carried a sleeping Toby in his arms, his head resting heavily against his father’s shoulder, while Maya walked beside him, clutching his hand tightly. The stark contrast between the cold, neglected nursery they had just fled and the sleek, modern luxury of his executive suite was jarring, yet to Maya, the vast open space felt infinitely safer than the home they had left behind.
"Are we staying here, Daddy?" Maya whispered, her eyes wide as she took in the leather couches, the polished mahogany conference table, and the glowing digital displays on the walls.
"Just for a little while, sweetheart," Gideon replied softly, walking over to the private executive lounge attached to his office. The suite included a fully equipped private bathroom, a small kitchenette, and a comfortable resting area where he occasionally crashed during late-night crunch periods.
He gently laid Toby down on the oversized leather sofa, arranging his own cashmere overcoat over the toddler as an improvised blanket. Toby let out a soft sigh, burrowing into the warm fabric and instantly falling back into a deep, exhausted sleep.
Maya stood hesitantly by the doorway, her arms wrapped around herself. Gideon immediately noticed, walking over and kneeling down in front of her.
"Are you cold?" he asked gently.
She nodded slightly, her lower lip trembling. "My pajamas are damp from the hallway floor."
"Let's fix that right now," Gideon said, standing up and walking over to his private wardrobe closet. He kept a selection of spare formal wear and casual clothes here for emergency trips. Rifling through the shelves, he pulled out a soft, oversized black cotton hoodie—one of his favorites, thick and warm.
He brought it back and gently slipped it over Maya’s head. The sleeves hung down past her hands, and the hem fell all the way to her knees, making her look like a tiny bird swallowed up in a heavy blanket. A faint, watery smile touched the corners of her mouth for the first time that night.
"There. Much better," Gideon murmured, brushing a stray lock of hair away from her forehead. "Now, stay right here with Toby. I need to make a few phone calls. I'll be right outside the glass, okay?"
Maya nodded, crawling up onto the sofa beside her brother and pulling her knees to her chest.
Gideon walked out into his main office, closing the glass door halfway so he could keep a clear visual on them while maintaining privacy for his calls. He sat down at his massive glass desk, pulling his smartphone from his pocket. His hands were steady now, fueled by a cold, calculating fury that left no room for hesitation.
His first call was to Marcus Vance, his longtime personal attorney and the managing partner at Seattle’s top corporate and civil litigation firm. It rang twice before a gruff, sleep-roughened voice answered.
"Gideon? Do you know what time it is?" Marcus grumbled, rubbing the sleep from his eyes. "If this isn't about the merger falling through, it better be good."
"Marcus, I need you to wake up and listen to me very carefully," Gideon said, his voice hard, flat, and devoid of any warmth. "I am sending you an address. My home in Laurelhurst."
"Alright... what about it?"
"I want a private, independent team of child welfare investigators, a certified medical examiner, and two private security guards at that address within the hour," Gideon commanded, his tone leaving no room for argument. "They are going to break into the master bedroom, document everything inside, and remove Isla from the premises immediately. I want a complete forensic audit of every bank account, text message, and security camera feed in that house."
There was a sharp intake of breath on the other end of the line. Marcus was wide awake now. The casual, sleepy tone vanished, replaced by the razor-sharp focus of a veteran legal shark.
"Gideon, what the hell happened?" Marcus asked, his voice dropping an octave. "Isla called me last week to rave about your anniversary plans. She sounded like the picture of domestic bliss."
"She is a monster who has been starving and terrorizing my children while I was away," Gideon hissed, gripping the edge of his desk so hard his knuckles turned white. "She locked them in their rooms at night, abused them, and manipulated me into believing everything was fine. If you aren't willing to handle this, tell me now and I'll find someone else."
"Hold on, Gideon. Calm down," Marcus replied instantly, his voice firm and grounding. "I'm on my way. I'll call Judge Harrison to secure an emergency restraining order and an immediate order for sole temporary custody of the children before dawn breaks. Sit tight. Don't go back to the house. Let my people handle the initial confrontation."

"Understood," Gideon said, cutting the call without another word.
He dropped his phone onto the desk and rubbed his temples, letting out a long, ragged breath. The first piece of the trap was set. Isla’s comfortable, luxurious life of deception was about to come crashing down around her, and she would find no mercy waiting for her at the end of it.
