Chapter 4 - A Billionaire’s Gamble

By the next morning, James had moved Rebecca and the twins out of the isolated mountain cabin and into a secure, heavily guarded wing of his primary estate in the city. The move sent immediate shockwaves through the upper echelons of his multi-billion-dollar corporation. His board members were furious, calling emergency meetings and flooding his phone with frantic messages questioning his sanity.

"A homeless woman and two random children, James? You’re risking your entire reputation, your board seat, and the stability of the company!" shouted Arthur, the senior board director, leaning over the mahogany conference table.

James sat back in his leather chair, his expression an impenetrable mask of absolute calm. He looked at the circle of panicked, wealthy executives who measured human value solely in quarterly profits.

"My reputation is currently a collection of numbers on a screen, Arthur," James replied smoothly, his voice dangerously low. "These are living, breathing human beings. The matter is closed. If anyone has a problem with my personal life interfering with company shares, they are welcome to resign."

The room fell dead silent. No one dared to test him further.

Back in the residential wing of the estate, James spent his days balancing the high-stakes defense of his business against the encroaching legal threats from Marcus, while his evenings were spent learning the delicate, chaotic complexities of being around five-year-old twins. He learned how they liked their toast cut into triangles, what bedtime stories made them laugh, and the exact moment when their initial fear would soften into genuine trust.

He found himself personally ordering clothes, educational books, and toys, feeling a strange, hollow space in his chest—a void left by years of relentless work and isolation—start to fill with something warm, vibrant, and terrifyingly real.
