Chapter 3 - The Secret of the Locket

While James kept the intruder occupied at the edge of the property line, Rebecca retreated deeper into the safety of the cabin's shadows. Her heart pounded against her ribs like a trapped bird. Her hands trembled violently as she reached deep into the hidden lining of her battered backpack, searching through layers of worn fabric until her fingers brushed against something cold and metallic.

She pulled out a small, tarnished silver locket.

She knew that inside this tiny compartment were the micro-documents—the undeniable proof of corporate embezzlement, fraud, and blackmail—that could completely dismantle Marcus’s global empire. But she also knew that if Marcus ever found out she possessed them, none of them would make it out of these mountains alive. He had spent years hunting her across state lines precisely because of this secret.

She watched James through the small crack in the heavy wooden door. He was standing tall in the snow, his broad shoulders and commanding posture radiating a calm, unyielding authority that she hadn't seen in any man in years. But she also knew that James was playing a dangerous game with a man who had no moral boundaries.

"Mommy, why is that man outside so angry?" Chloe asked softly, tugging gently at the hem of her worn sleeve, her innocent eyes wide with confusion and fear.

"He’s just lost something he never really owned, sweetheart," Rebecca whispered back, her voice steadying as she looked down at her daughters with fierce devotion.

She turned away from the window toward the stone fireplace, where James had just stepped back inside, his face grim, his jaw set in quiet determination.

"He knows you have something, doesn't he?" James asked, closing the heavy oak door and locking the deadbolt with a solid click.

Rebecca looked down at the small piece of jewelry in her palm, then back up into James’s steady, intelligent eyes. "He knows what I took when I ran. If he gets his hands on this locket, he destroys us all."

James looked at the locket, then back at the woman and her children. A fierce, unyielding glint appeared in his eyes. "Then we don't play by his rules anymore," James said firmly. "We change the game entirely."
