Chapter 5 - The Confession

Dominic let go of the door, taking a half-step back into the cramped hallway. The rain outside beat a frantic rhythm against the windowpanes.
"Because they haven't spoken since you left," Dominic said, his voice dropping to a raw, broken whisper. "Because they won't eat. Because they look at me like I'm a monster."
"You are acting like a monster to them," Elena replied without hesitation.
The bluntness of her words stung, but Dominic didn't flash his temper. He couldn't. He was entirely deflated.
"I lost their mother, Elena," Dominic said, looking down at the scuffed linoleum floor. "Isabella... she was my whole world. When she died, a part of me died too. I built walls around that house. I thought if I kept my daughters safe behind money and security, they would be okay. But I locked them in a tomb. And I was the ghost haunting it."
Elena watched him closely. The anger in her eyes softened, replaced by a deep, aching pity.
"Money can't buy grief, Mr. Russo," Elena said softly. "And it certainly can't buy love. Your daughters didn't need a hundred doctors. They needed their father to stop running away from his own home."
Dominic looked up, his brown eyes—so similar to his daughters'—shining with unshed tears. "I don't know how to be a father anymore. I only know how to be a boss."
Elena sighed, stepping back to open the door fully. "Then let me teach you. But on one condition."
"Name it."

"You stop running. No more sudden trips to Chicago, no hiding in your study for days. You stay. You eat with us. You sing with us."
Dominic nodded slowly. "I agree."
