Chapter 3 - The Unraveling

By the third day without Elena, the mansion had completely fallen apart.

Marco, Dominic’s fiercely loyal right-hand man and head of security, walked into the study with a stack of encrypted reports, but stopped when he saw his boss. Dominic looked ten years older. Dark circles bruised his eyes, and his tie hung loose around an unbuttoned collar.

"Boss," Marco said cautiously. "You look like hell."

"Shut up, Marco," Dominic muttered, rubbing his temples. "Where is she?"

"Who?"

"Elena Vasquez."

Marco raised an eyebrow. "You fired her, Dominic. She went back to her apartment in Queens. Rosa checked on her. She's looking for work."

Dominic stood up abruptly, knocking his chair back against the wall. "Find her."

"Find her? To pay her severance?"

"To bring her back, you idiot!" Dominic roared, slamming his fist onto the desk. "The girls haven't eaten a full meal in two days. They won't let the new nanny through the nursery door. Valentina bit Mrs. Higgins on the wrist this morning!"

Marco stared at him in shock. For fourteen months, Dominic had tried every luxury science and money could buy. Now, a simple housekeeper had become the anchor of the Russo household.

"It won't be that easy, boss," Marco said slowly. "From what Rosa told me, Elena didn't want to leave. But you humiliated her. A woman with her kind of pride... she won't just come back because you wave a check at her."
