Chapter 5 - Truth and Consequences

A week passed, and Sophia was finally discharged from the hospital.
She didn't return to the small, broken house she had shared with Ryan. Instead, Ethan had arranged for her to stay at a private, heavily guarded estate in the hills of Malibu. The estate overlooked the ocean, the sound of the crashing waves providing a therapeutic soundtrack to her recovery.
For the first time in years, Sophia felt the heavy shroud of anxiety lift from her shoulders. She spent her days walking through the gardens, her hand resting peacefully on her growing bump. Her brothers took turns staying with her. Ethan would cook elaborate meals, Matthew would manage her medical bills and future financial security, and Lucas would make her laugh with tech-world gossip.
One afternoon, as they all sat on the veranda, Lucas turned on a large television screen. "Well, boys and girls, it's time for the final act of Ryan’s public downfall."
The screen showed a live broadcast from the Los Angeles County Courthouse. Ryan was being led up the steps in handcuffs, surrounded by a swarm of reporters. He looked haggard, his clothes wrinkled, his spirit completely broken. He looked like a ghost of the man who had raised a wooden stick in that small living room.
A reporter shouted, "Mr. Miller! Is it true that you assaulted your pregnant wife based on false rumors?"
Another yelled, "Did you intentionally defraud the state to fund your gambling debts?"
Ryan kept his head down, refusing to answer.
Beside him, his court-appointed lawyer—the only lawyer he could afford since no reputable firm would touch him—looked completely overwhelmed.
"The prosecution has filed twenty-two counts of aggravated assault, domestic battery, corporate fraud, and tax evasion," Matthew explained calmly, sipping his tea. "The evidence Lucas gathered is ironclad. The DA is pushing for the maximum sentence. He’s looking at fifteen to twenty years in a maximum-security facility."
Sophia watched the screen. She expected to feel a surge of anger, or perhaps a lingering sense of fear. But as she looked at the broken man on the screen, she felt nothing but a profound sense of detachment. He was no longer her husband. He was a stranger who had chosen darkness, while she had chosen the light.

"Thank you," Sophia whispered, looking at her three brothers. "Thank you for saving us."
Ethan walked over, wrapping a strong arm around her shoulders. "You don't ever have to thank us, Sophia. We are a family. We protect our own. Always."
