Chapter 4 - The Walls Close In

When Sophia woke up the next morning, her hospital room was no longer cold and sterile.

It was filled with the scent of fresh lilies and lavender. A soft, luxurious blanket had been placed over her, replacing the rough hospital sheets. Sitting in a chair by the window was Matthew, his laptop open on his knees, his fingers flying across the keyboard with practiced efficiency.

"Matthew?" she whispered, her voice hoarse.

Matthew immediately closed his laptop and rushed to her side. The cold, calculating financial genius melted away, replaced entirely by the loving older brother. He gently took her hand, careful not to disturb the IV line.

"I'm here, Soph. We're all here," he said softly, pressing a kiss to her knuckles.

"The baby..."

"The doctors just checked. The heartbeat is strong, Sophia. The baby is a fighter. Just like her mother," Matthew smiled, a genuine, warm expression that eased a massive weight from Sophia’s chest.

"Where are Ethan and Lucas?"

"Lucas is outside making sure the hospital security is entirely privatized for your floor. No one gets in without our permission. Ethan is... well, Ethan is doing what Ethan does best. Executing a corporate execution."

At that exact moment, Ryan Miller was realizing the true definition of powerlessness.

He had dragged himself back to his house, his jaw swollen and throbbing. But when he tried to insert his key into the front lock, it wouldn't turn. The lock had been replaced with a high-tech biometric scanner.

Suddenly, two men in dark suits stepped out from the shadows of the porch.

"Mr. Miller," one of them said, holding up a legal document. "This property has been seized due to immediate foreclosure. Your personal belongings have been packed and placed in storage. You are legally barred from entering this perimeter."

"This is my house!" Ryan yelled, his voice cracking. "My name is on the deed!"

"Not anymore," the man replied smoothly. "The holding company that purchased your debt executed an expedited default clause due to criminal activity on the premises. You are officially homeless."

Panicked, Ryan pulled out his phone to call his bank, but a notification popped up on his screen: ALL ACCOUNTS FROZEN PENDING INVESTIGATION.

His phone then buzzed with a text message from an unknown number. It was from Lucas: “Check the news.”

Ryan frantically opened a browser app. The headline of the local business section read: MILLER’S AUTO BODY SHUT DOWN AMID FRAUD AND TAX EVASION INVESTIGATION. The article detailed every single illegal cash transaction Ryan had ever taken, every corner he had cut, and listed his name as the primary suspect in a major tax fraud case.

Within twelve hours, Ryan had gone from a man who felt powerful enough to strike his pregnant wife to a pariah with no money, no home, no business, and no allies. He stood on the sidewalk, the cold California wind biting through his shirt, realizing that the Bennett family wasn't just punishing him—they were erasing him from existence.
