Chapter 8 - A True Apology

Six months passed. Winter arrived, covering Columbus in a beautiful blanket of white snow.

One evening, my phone rang from an unknown number. I answered it, and to my surprise, it was Vanessa.

Her voice was different. The sharp, arrogant edge was gone, replaced by a quiet, trembling vulnerability.

"Daniel?" she whispered.

"Vanessa," I said, keeping my tone neutral but guarded.

"I... I'm calling to say I'm sorry," she said, and I heard her break down in tears. "I lost everything, Daniel. Mark is gone. My friends... when they found out why the wedding was actually canceled, they stopped talking to me. Mom and Dad keep telling me I did nothing wrong, but I know I did. I was so obsessed with having a perfect life that I became a monster to my own niece."

I listened, letting her speak. For the first time in my life, Vanessa wasn't trying to spin a story. She was genuinely broken.

"I don't expect you to forgive me," she continued, sniffing. "But I wanted you to know that I'm going to therapy. I'm trying to change. I miss you. And I miss the kids."

"I appreciate the apology, Vanessa," I said quietly. "It takes courage to admit when you're wrong. But forgiveness takes time. We have to rebuild trust, and that starts with how you treat Lily."

"I understand," she said. "Whatever it takes. I just want to be a real aunt to her."

We hung up on decent terms. It wasn't a perfect reconciliation, but it was a seed of hope planted in frozen ground.
