Chapter 3 - The Shaking Foundation

The fallout from Mark’s confrontation with Vanessa did not take long to manifest.
Two days after my phone call, the first crack in Vanessa’s perfect wedding facade appeared. Mark’s parents, Thomas and Eleanor Reynolds, were highly respected philanthropists in Cleveland who were funding nearly two-thirds of the lavish wedding. When Mark confronted Vanessa about Lily’s exclusion, Vanessa had reportedly tried to laugh it off, calling it a "minor logistical misunderstanding."
But Mark wasn't laughing. He had immediately called his parents.
On a Tuesday afternoon, my phone rang. It was Eleanor Reynolds.
"Daniel, dear," Eleanor said, her voice warm but carrying the steel of a woman who tolerated zero nonsense. "Mark told us what happened with sweet Lily. I want to apologize on behalf of our family. We were told you were keeping her home for her own comfort. To find out she was actively disinvited because of her speech delay is... well, it is abhorrent."
"Thank you, Eleanor," I said, feeling a massive weight lift from my shoulders. "I didn't want to cause drama, but I couldn't let Lily be pushed aside."
"You did exactly what a father should do," Eleanor said firmly. "I want you to know that Thomas and I have spoken to Vanessa. We told her that if Lily is not welcome, then our family’s financial backing of this wedding is officially withdrawn. And more than that, we will not attend a ceremony built on the humiliation of a child."
Within an hour of that call, my mother tried to call me six times. I ignored every single call. Then came the texts from Vanessa.

“You ruined my life! What did you say to Mark’s parents? You’re a monster, Daniel! Call Mom right now and fix this!”
I put my phone on "Do Not Disturb" and took Ethan and Lily out for ice cream. For the first time in weeks, the knot in my stomach began to untangle.
