Chapter 7 - A Quiet Sanctuary

In the weeks following the cancellation of the wedding, my house in Columbus became a sanctuary of peace.

My mother and father tried to blame me for the breakup, sending angry emails and letters, but I blocked their addresses and refused to engage. They had chosen their side, and I had chosen mine.

Instead, I focused all my energy on my children. Without the looming shadow of my family's disapproval, Lily began to flourish. We found a wonderful new speech therapist who used art and play to help Lily express herself.

One Saturday afternoon, there was a knock at our door. When I opened it, I was surprised to see Mark standing there. He looked lighter, his face free of the stress that had weighed him down for months.

"Hey, Daniel," he said with a warm smile. "I was in town and wondered if I could stop by?"

"Of course," I said, stepping aside. "Come on in."

Ethan and Lily ran into the hallway. When Lily saw Mark, her eyes lit up. "Uncle Mark!" she squeaked, running to hug his knees. She had always called him that, and despite everything, she still remembered him.

Mark knelt down, hugging her tightly. "Hey there, beautiful princess. I hear you've been doing some amazing drawings lately."

He reached into his bag and pulled out a beautifully wrapped package. "I brought something for you. And for Ethan."

For Ethan, he had a book on space exploration, which my son immediately devoured. For Lily, he pulled out a professional art kit filled with glitter pens, high-quality sketchbooks, and a set of watercolor paints.

Lily gasped, her hands flying to her cheeks. "For me?"

"Only the best for my favorite artist," Mark said softly.

As the kids played, Mark and I sat in the kitchen. He told me he was moving his practice closer to Columbus to be near his family's new charity branch. "I want to be around people who value what matters," he said. "And if you guys don't mind, I’d love to keep being a part of the kids' lives."

"We would love nothing more, Mark," I said, shaking his hand.
