Chapter 6 - The Collapse of the Perfect Facade

Ten days before the wedding, the final blow fell.

Mark Reynolds called me late on a Thursday night. He didn't sound angry anymore; he just sounded exhausted and profoundly sad.

"It's over, Daniel," Mark said.

"What do you mean?"

"I called off the wedding," he said softly. "We're done."

I sat down on the edge of my bed. "Mark... I'm so sorry. I didn't want to destroy your relationship."

"You didn't destroy it. You saved me from making the biggest mistake of my life," Mark replied. "After everything happened, Vanessa didn't show an ounce of remorse. She didn't care that she hurt Lily. She only cared about the venue, the dress, and how it would look to her friends if the wedding was canceled. When I told her we could just have a small, intimate ceremony with everyone—including Lily—she threw a vase at me and called my sister a 'charity case' that she was tired of pretending to care about."

A sickening silence hung in the air.

"She said that?" I asked, horrified.

"Yes," Mark said. "The mask completely slipped. I realized I didn't know the woman I was about to marry. She is obsessed with a perfect image, but she has a hollow heart. My parents are pulling all the funds, and I've already notified the vendors. There is no wedding."

I felt a mixture of relief for Mark and profound sadness for the sister I thought I knew. Vanessa had traded her future and her family for a superficial dream, and in the end, she was left with nothing but the ruins of her own vanity.
