Chapter 5 - The Fall of the Monster

The jury deliberated for less than three hours—a record time for a high-profile attempted murder trial.

When they filed back into the courtroom, the air was suffocatingly tense. I stood between Clara and Evelyn, my heart pounding, holding my sister’s hand so tightly our fingers were numb.

"Will the defendant please stand," Judge Montgomery commanded.

Luke stood up. He tried to maintain his arrogant posture, but his hands were shaking uncontrollably at his sides.

"On the first count of Attempted Premeditated Murder, how do you find?"

"Guilty," the jury foreman announced firmly.

A collective gasp echoed through the gallery.

"On the second count of Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon, how do you find?"

"Guilty."

"On the third count of Reproductive Coercion and Criminal Abuse, how do you find?"

"Guilty."

Count after count—ten charges in total—the word Guilty rang out like thunder claps tearing through the room. With every guilty verdict, the monstrous illusion that Luke had built around himself crumbled into dust.

Judge Montgomery looked down at Luke with utter contempt. "Mr. Vance, you are a predator who disguised himself as a pillar of society. You used your wealth, your power, and your physical strength to inflict unimaginable cruelty upon the person you swore to love and protect. The court finds no mitigating circumstances in your behavior—only pure, unadulterated malice."

The judge slammed his gavel down with a resounding boom. "I sentence you to forty-five years in state penitentiary without the possibility of parole for thirty years. Take him away."

Bailiffs stepped forward instantly, snapping heavy iron handcuffs around Luke’s wrists. As they dragged him away in chains, he finally lost all control. He kicked, screamed, and spat, cursing my name as his aristocratic facade completely disintegrated into pathetic madness.

"Caroline! You bitch! You’re nothing without me! You’ll rot! You’ll rot!" he shrieked until the heavy doors slammed shut behind him, cutting off his voice forever.

I collapsed into Clara’s arms, sobbing uncontrollably. But these were not tears of fear or pain. They were tears of pure, overwhelming liberation. The monster was gone. He was locked away in the dark, where he could never, ever touch me again.

Outside the courthouse, dozens of journalists, camera crews, and crowd members were waiting. But they weren't there to gawk at a victim anymore. They were cheering. Women held signs supporting domestic abuse survivors, shouting my name.

Evelyn stepped up to the microphones, but then she turned and held her hand out to me. "It’s your voice now, Caroline. Tell them."

I stepped up to the podium, facing the sea of cameras. I didn't hide my scarred neck. I didn't wear a veil. I looked straight into the lenses.

"For years, I was told I was weak, broken, and helpless," I said, my voice echoing clearly across the square. "I was made to believe that no one would hear me if I screamed. But silence is the weapon that abusers rely on. To every woman who is trapped in the dark right now: you are not broken. You are not alone. And your story is not over."
