Chapter 4 - The Crucible of Justice

The Superior Court of New York was packed to capacity on the opening day of State v. Luke Vance. The trial had become a national sensation—a high-stakes battle between old money, corporate influence, and the horrifying reality of domestic horror hidden behind gated mansions.

I sat at the prosecution table beside Evelyn Reed and the District Attorney, wearing a high-collared navy blue dress that concealed the thick compression bandages still wrapped around my neck and chest. Across the aisle sat Luke. He was surrounded by four high-priced defense attorneys, looking polished, calm, and impeccably groomed. Whenever his eyes caught mine, he offered a small, sad smile designed for the jury—a look that feigned tragic pity for a "mad woman."

The defense wasted no time launching their assault.

Their lead attorney, a razor-sharp man named Richard Sterling, opened with a devastatingly charismatic speech. He painted Luke as a devoted, long-suffering husband who had silently endured his wife's escalating self-harm and hysterical delusions. He presented fabricated medical records from private clinics Luke had paid off years ago, showing "diagnoses" of severe borderline personality disorder and severe depression.

"Members of the jury," Sterling declared, pacing before the box. "You will hear horrific descriptions of injuries. No one denies that Mrs. Vance suffered immense physical trauma. But the question is not if she was hurt—it is who hurt her. The evidence will show that Caroline Vance, driven by the unbearable grief of her inability to carry a child, inflicted these wounds upon herself in a tragic cry for help, and now, in her broken state, seeks to ruin the man who tried to save her."

I clenched my fists under the table, my nails digging into my palms. I had to force myself to breathe, repeating Evelyn’s words in my mind: Let them build their house of cards. We are going to blow it down.

The trial dragged on for two brutal weeks. Luke’s defense brought in bought-and-paid-for medical experts who claimed my internal scarring could have been caused by severe pelvic infections or self-administered substances. They cross-examined Clara, trying to frame her as an estranged sister who was leveraging the scandal for monetary gain.

Then came the turning point. The prosecution called Dr. Vance to the stand.

Dr. Vance took the oath with an unshakable dignity. As chief of trauma surgery, her credentials were unimpeachable. The prosecution displayed giant high-resolution scans of my body across the court’s digital screens.

"Dr. Vance," the prosecutor asked, "can you explain to the court the nature of the burns on the victim’s abdomen?"

"The burns were caused by boiling water, approximately 100 degrees Celsius," Dr. Vance testified, her voice clear and resonance filling the courtroom. "The distribution pattern is highly specific. A self-inflicted pour from a standing or sitting position would show a downward splash trail originating from the upper torso or lap. However, the skin analysis shows a forced, direct immersion splash centered squarely on the lower abdomen, with distinct restraint bruises on her wrists and ankles corresponding to human hands."

Murmurs rippled through the courtroom. Sterling leaped up to object, but the judge overruled him.

"Furthermore," Dr. Vance continued, holding up a forensic report, "our microscopic analysis of the uterine wall tissue revealed clear evidence of multiple forced blunt-force traumas occurring precisely during the first trimester of three separate past pregnancies. These were not natural miscarriages. These were mechanical disruptions caused by external violent impact. In plain terms: someone repeatedly beat her lower body with the specific intent to destroy the pregnancies."

Luke’s composure cracked for a fraction of a second. His jaw tightened, and his knuckles turned white against the mahogany table.

"And finally," the prosecutor said, "let us turn to Exhibit 42."

The courtroom lights dimmed. Evelyn played the recovered audio file from the smart home cloud server.

The room froze as the sound of a struggle filled the silence. Luke’s voice blasted through the courtroom speakers, raw, unhinged, and monstrous—completely stripped of his cultured facade.

"Shut up! Shut your mouth!" the audio roared. The sound of water boiling violently, followed by a heavy glass pot hitting the counter. "You think you can fail me again? I'll boil your belly until a son comes out!"

Then came my high-pitched, agonizing scream—a sound so raw, so utterly devoid of hope, that two jurors instantly covered their mouths, and one broke into tears.

"Please, Luke, no! Please!"

"You're useless! You're broken!"

The audio cut off. Silence slammed down on the courtroom like a physical weight.

I looked across the aisle at Luke. His polished act had completely shattered. He was sweating, his face pale, his eyes wide with a mixture of rage and terror. His lawyers were furiously whispering around him, frantically trying to salvage a sinking ship.

"Your Honor," Evelyn said softly into her microphone. "The prosecution rests."
