Chapter 2 - Voices in the Dark

The phone rang four times before a voice answered on the speaker. It was thick with sleep, yet instantly recognizable.

"Hello?"

"Clara," I gasped, my vocal cords raw from screams that had died in my throat hours earlier. "Clara, it’s Caroline. I’m at St. Jude’s Memorial."

There was a sudden shuffling of sheets, a sharp intake of breath, and then Clara’s voice lost all its drowsiness. "Caroline? My God, Caroline! Where have you been? Luke said you moved abroad, that you didn't want to talk to any of us—"

"He lied," I whispered. "Clara, please. He’s here. I’m hurt."

Before Clara could reply, Luke lunged across the sterile space, his face twisted into a mask of pure fury. "Give me that damn phone!" he snarled, shoving the nurse aside. But Dr. Vance moved with seasoned efficiency. She pressed a hidden wall button, and within ten seconds, two heavy-set hospital security guards burst into the room.

"Sir, step away from the patient immediately!" the lead guard ordered, his hand resting on his holster.

"She’s my wife!" Luke bellowed, his neck veins bulging, red patches spreading across his jaw. "You have no right to interfere in a domestic matter! She’s mentally unstable, can’t you see? She’s imagining things!"

"Mr. Vance," Dr. Vance said, her voice dripping with lethal composure. "I am the chief of surgery, and this room is under medical quarantine for a criminal investigation. Officers are already en route. If you do not leave this room voluntarily, security will detain you by force."

Luke looked around, his dark eyes darting from the guards to the doctor, and finally to me. The veil of the charming, devoted husband had completely fallen, revealing the monster underneath. "You’ll regret this, Caroline," he spat, his voice dropping to a terrifying whisper that sent ice through my veins. "You think these people can protect you? You belong to me. You’ll always belong to me."

The guards forcefully escorted him down the corridor, his frantic shouts echoing until the heavy double doors clicked shut.

Silence descended upon the room, broken only by the rhythmic beep of my heart monitor. I sank back into the stiff hospital mattress, every nerve ending in my abdomen burning as if the water were still boiling on my skin. The physical pain was excruciating, but the emotional realization was devastating.

He killed them.

The doctor’s words echoed in my mind over and over. I had never been infertile. The three miscarriages I had suffered over the five years of our marriage hadn't been random tragedies or the fault of my "weak body" as Luke had repeatedly insisted. Every time I had been beaten, every time I had been pushed down the stairs or struck in the stomach, he had been deliberately murdering his own unborn sons simply because he couldn't control his violent rages, only to turn around and blame me for not bearing an heir.

Dr. Vance walked over, gentle hands adjusting the IV drip pumping powerful pain relief into my veins. "Caroline, I need you to stay calm. The narcotics will help with the pain, but we have a long road ahead. The scald marks cover forty percent of your lower abdomen and thighs. You have severe internal inflammation."

"Will I... will I survive?" I asked, tears finally spilling over my bruised cheeks, stinging the fresh burns on my neck.

"You will survive," Dr. Vance said fiercely, clutching my hand. "Because you survived him tonight. But we need to document every single injury before they take you to the burn unit. The police are downstairs, taking his statement—and preparing to take yours."

Twenty minutes later, the door creaked open. I braced myself, expecting Luke’s legal team or another threat, but instead, a woman slammed through the entrance. Her hair was messy, her coat hastily thrown over her pajamas, and her eyes were wild with worry.

"Caroline!"

"Clara..." I sobbed.

My sister rushed to the bed, stopping abruptly as her eyes landed on the bandages wrapped around my torso, the yellowing bruises on my face, and the gaunt, ghostly shell of the person I had become. She covered her mouth, a horrified sob escaping her lips.

"What did he do to you?" Clara whispered, falling to her knees by the bed, careful not to touch my bandaged frame. "Oh God, Caroline... he told us you hated us. He sent messages from your phone telling Mom and Dad to leave you alone, that you were happy traveling the world. We tried to find you, but he changed your address, your locks..."

"He trapped me," I wept. "He took my passport, my credit cards, my phone... he made me think everyone abandoned me."

"I am so sorry," Clara cried, taking my hand gently, kissing my trembling fingers. "I swear to you, Caroline, he will never lay a hand on you again. I don't care how much money his family has. I don't care how many lawyers he buys. I will tear him apart."

Two police officers entered shorty after—Detective Miller, a stern-faced woman with sharp gray eyes, and her partner. They set up an audio recorder on the bedside table.

"Mrs. Vance," Detective Miller began, her tone soft yet professional. "We’ve detained your husband in the lobby. He claims you had a psychotic episode and spilled boiling water on yourself while trying to make tea. He also claims your internal injuries are from past self-harm. We need your side of the story on record."

I looked at Clara, who gave my hand an encouraging squeeze, and then at Dr. Vance, who stood by like a protective sentinel. I drew in a deep breath—the first breath of my new, terrifying, yet free existence.

"It started three years ago," I began, my voice growing stronger with every word. "He started isolating me. Then came the slaps, the punches... and whenever I got pregnant, he would get furious because he feared the stress would ruin his lifestyle. On Tuesday night, he came home drunk. He demanded I bear him a son, but when I told him I couldn't control nature, he went to the kitchen. He boiled a pot of water... and he held me down."

Detective Miller’s face hardened into stone as she took notes. "Did he say anything while doing this?"

"He said..." My voice quivered, but I pushed through. "He said, 'I'll boil your belly until a son comes out!'"

The room went dead silent. Detective Miller stopped typing, looked directly at me, and clicked off the recorder.

"That is sufficient for aggravated domestic assault, attempted murder, and torture," Miller declared sternly. "With Dr. Vance’s medical report regarding the past trauma and lost pregnancies, we have enough to arrest him right now without bail."

For the first time in six years, the suffocating knot in my chest loosened just a fraction. But as I watched the police walk out to cuff the man who had been my personal warden, I knew this was only the opening bell of a war. Luke was rich, powerful, and ruthless. And he would not go down without trying to destroy me completely.
