Chapter 3 - The Gathering Storm

The next three weeks were a agonizing blur of skin grafts, physical therapy, and terrifying nightmares. My body was a battleground of scar tissue and healing skin. The physical pain of burn wound debridement—the daily process where nurses had to scrape away dead tissue so new skin could grow—was a living hell. But the mental anguish was far worse.

Every time a door slammed in the hallway, I jumped. Every time a male voice drifted into my room, my heart hammered against my ribs until the monitors beeped frantically.

However, I was no longer alone. Clara had taken a leave of absence from her firm to stay by my side. She transformed my hospital room into a command center. She brought me clothes, bought me a new phone, and brought in a woman named Evelyn Reed—one of the top criminal defense attorneys and victim advocates in the state.

Evelyn was a sharp-featured woman in her late forties with razor-sharp intelligence and an unyielding demeanor. She sat by my bed, opening a thick leather briefcase packed with files.

"Caroline," Evelyn said, her eyes pinning me with absolute clarity. "I'm not going to sugarcoat this. Luke’s family has retained Vance & Sterling, one of the most powerful legal defense firms in the country. They have already posted his preliminary bail through a high-priced judge on a technicality, though he is under strict house arrest with an electronic ankle monitor."

My blood ran cold. "He's out?"

"He is out of jail, but he cannot come within five hundred yards of you," Evelyn assured me quickly. "However, their strategy is already taking shape. They are attempting to frame you as mentally unstable. They have unearthed old medical records from your early twenties—a brief stint of mild postpartum depression your mother suffered, claiming it’s hereditary. They are going to argue that you suffered from severe, untreated somatic delusion, that you burned yourself, and that your miscarriages were self-induced out of guilt."

I gripped the bedsheets, my knuckles turning white. "He murdered my babies! Dr. Vance found the internal scarring! The force of his blows shattered my pelvis twice!"

"We know that," Evelyn said calmly, placing a reassuring hand on my arm. "And Dr. Vance’s forensic testimony is our strongest weapon. But a trial is not just about the truth; it's about evidence, narrative, and endurance. Luke’s defense team is going to try to break you before we even set foot in court. They will try to exhaust your finances, blacken your reputation, and drive you to a breakdown."

"I won't break," I said, my voice trembling but steady. "I’ve survived his fires, Evelyn. He can't hurt me anymore."

"Good," Evelyn smiled grimly. "Because we are going to hit back twice as hard. We aren't just defending you against his lies; we are filing a civil suit for full asset seizure, punitive damages, and pressing full criminal charges for attempted murder and reproductive coercion."

A week later, I was finally discharged from the hospital. Clara took me to her secluded cottage in the countryside, miles away from the city where Luke’s shadow hung heavy. The quiet rustle of trees and the fresh, untainted air felt like a foreign planet after years of being trapped in Luke's soundproofed mansion.

Yet, Luke’s reach was long.

One evening, as Clara and I were preparing dinner, the local news broadcast blared from the television. My heart stopped. Luke was on the screen, standing on the steps of his family’s corporate headquarters, dressed in a tailored black suit, looking heartbroken and dignified.

"I love my wife dearly," Luke was saying to a crowd of reporters, a solitary, rehearsed tear glinting on his cheek. "Caroline has been suffering from a tragic, deep-seated psychological breakdown for years. I have tried everything—therapy, private specialists, constant care—to save her from her own inner demons. It breaks my heart that in her confusion, she has turned on the man who protected her. I only pray she gets the professional help she so desperately needs, and I will welcome her home with open arms when she recovers."

"That sick, manipulative bastard!" Clara raged, throwing a wooden spoon at the television screen. "Look at him playing the martyr!"

I stared at the image of the man I had once believed loved me. Seeing him perform so effortlessly for the camera didn't terrify me this time; it ignited a cold, terrifying rage deep within my chest. He wasn't a god. He wasn't an invincible master. He was just a coward who hid behind wealth and lies.

"Let him talk," I whispered, my voice cold. "Let him tell the world how much he loves me. It will only make his fall that much sweeter."

The next day, Evelyn arrived at the cottage with a breakthrough.

"Luke made a mistake," Evelyn announced, dropping a USB drive onto the kitchen table. "When he had you locked up in that house, he didn't just hire security guards. He installed a state-of-the-art smart home system with internal cloud recording to monitor your movements. He thought he deleted the servers from his local network the night you were taken to the hospital."

"Did he?" Clara asked, leaning in eagerly.

"He deleted the local files," Evelyn smirked. "But he forgot that the security company he hired automatically backs up raw, unedited audio and video metadata to a secondary off-site cloud server for 30 days before overwrite. We just subpoenaed the cloud provider."

My breath caught in my throat. "The night he burned me... is it on video?"

May you like

Evelyn looked at me solemnly. "The living room camera caught the sound. The audio is crystal clear, Caroline. His voice, his threats... and your screams. It’s all there."

Tears blurred my vision, but this time they were not tears of sorrow. They were the first drops of a coming storm that would wash Luke Vance out of my life forever.
