Chapter 9 - The Celebration of Life

To mark a fresh start, Melissa and I organized a completely different kind of gathering exactly one year after the aborted wedding date.
There was no white lace, no expensive country club, and no strangers. Just a warm, sunlit afternoon in our backyard, surrounded by close friends, good food, and genuine laughter.
Ethan was busy grilling mini sliders with his cousins, his shiny junior police badge pinned proudly to his apron.
Melissa walked up behind me on the patio, holding two glasses of sparkling apple cider. She looked radiant—not with the artificial, painted glow of a forced bride, but with the authentic, sparkling radiance of a woman truly free.
She handed me a glass and clinked it gently against mine.
