Chapter 6 - The Tables Turn

Grant let out a sharp howl of pain as the iron legs slammed into his kneecaps, buckling his legs and sending him crashing hard onto the hardwood floor.
"Run!" Melissa screamed, grabbing my hand with a grip far stronger than I expected.
Colin lunged to catch us, but before he could grab my shoulder, the heavy oak door of the bridal suite splintered with a deafening crash.
The door flew inward off its hinges, smashing Colin backward into the wall.
Standing in the shattered doorway was Sheriff Miller, flanked by three armed deputies and my wide-eyed, brave eight-year-old son, Ethan.
"Stay right where you are! Hands where we can see them!" Sheriff Miller's voice boomed through the room, echoing off the luxury wallpaper.
Colin immediately threw his hands in the air, sliding down the wall in surrender. On the floor, Grant groaned, clutching his shattered knees while glaring up at the uniforms with pure, unadulterated hatred.
Ethan broke past the deputies and launched himself straight into my arms, burying his face in my neck.

"Mom! I found the sheriff on the highway! I told you I'd help!" Ethan sobbed into my shoulder.
I held him tighter than I had ever held anything in my life, kissing the top of his head as tears of relief finally broke free. "You saved us, baby. You're a hero."
