Chapter 7 - Confrontation at the Estate

Before the formal court hearing the next morning, federal marshals escorted Ryan, accompanied by legal counsel, to the Vance estate to oversee the recovery of Sophie’s personal belongings and documents that had been illegally seized from our home months ago.

The estate, once a symbol of grand status, was surrounded by yellow crime scene tape. Federal agents were carrying out heavy steel filing cabinets and computer towers.

Arthur Vance sat in his grand library, handcuffed to a heavy oak chair, supervised by two armed marshals. His expensive suit was wrinkled, his hair unkempt, and the arrogant sneer he had worn for decades was replaced by a hollow, desperate glare.

When Ryan walked into the room, Arthur looked up, his jaw trembling.

"You destroyed this family, Ryan," Arthur spat, his voice hoarse. "You chose a woman and a child over your own blood. You handed everything I built over to the government!"

Ryan stood in front of his father, looking down at him not with anger, but with profound pity.

"You destroyed this family the moment you put two locks on a door to shut up a seven-year-old child," Ryan said calmly. "You thought power meant controlling people through fear. But all you’ve done is ensure that you’ll die alone in a prison cell."

"I did it for the legacy!" Arthur yelled, his voice echoing off the high ceilings. "Everything was for the family name!"

"Sophie is the family name," Ryan replied sharply. "And she will grow up knowing that her father protected her, while her grandfather was nothing more than a thief and a coward."

Just then, Marcus Vance was led down the grand staircase in handcuffs by two federal officers, protesting loudly about his constitutional rights. He caught Ryan’s eye and looked away in shame, unable to face the man whose family he had helped terrorize.

Ryan turned his back on Arthur, leaving the library without looking back once. As he walked out the front doors of the estate, the sun broke through the morning clouds, illuminating the driveway.

Outside, Victoria was waiting in her car. She lowered the window and smiled softly at Ryan. "It’s done, isn't it?"

"It’s done," Ryan said. "Let's go home to my family."
