Chapter 4 - Cracks in the Dynasty

The news hit the morning headlines like a thunderclap. Former Judge Investigated in Grand Embezzlement and Child Endangerment Case.

By noon, reporters were gathered outside Arthur’s grand Victorian estate in the historic district. Police vehicles lined the driveway, and investigators were seen carrying out box after box of files, hard drives, and safe deposit boxes.

Melissa had turned herself in at 8:00 AM, desperate to secure a plea deal before her father could frame her as the sole perpetrator. She sat in an interrogation room, spilling every secret she had kept for the past three years.

"He promised to clear my debts," Melissa sobbed to the detectives, as seen in the transcript Ryan’s lawyer obtained later that afternoon. "He told me Ryan and Sarah were unfit parents, that they were going to spend Sophie’s inheritance. He said locking her in the room was just to 'calm her down' so she wouldn't throw tantrums. I didn't know he was planning to keep her there until she agreed never to speak!"

Meanwhile, Sarah and I stayed home with Sophie, trying to restore a sense of normalcy. We made pancakes, played board games, and kept the television turned off. But the emotional damage ran deep. Every time a door clicked shut, Sophie would flinch and look toward the hallway.

"Mommy?" Sophie asked, clutching her stuffed rabbit tightly while sitting on the kitchen counter. "Is Aunt Melissa going to come back?"

"No, sweetie," I said, kissing her forehead. "Aunt Melissa and Grandpa are going away for a very long time. They can never hurt you again."

"Why did Grandpa hate me?" she asked softly, tears welling in her large brown eyes.

Ryan walked into the room, kneeling beside her chair and taking her small hands in his. "Grandpa didn't hate you, Sophie. Grandpa was sick with greed. He forgot what really matters—family, love, and honesty. You were so brave for telling us the truth. You saved us all."

Sophie hugged Ryan around the neck, hiding her face against his shoulder.

Just then, our front doorbell rang. Ryan motioned for me to stay with Sophie while he walked to the front door, reaching into his pocket for his phone just in case. But when he opened the door, it wasn't the press or the police.

It was Victoria Vance—Ryan’s estranged mother, who had divorced Arthur ten years prior and vanished from public life after being pushed out of the family business. She carried a thick leather briefcase and had a look of absolute determination on her face.

"Ryan," Victoria said, her voice shaking with emotion. "I saw the news. It’s time we finish what Arthur started years ago."
