Chapter 3 - The Secret Ledger

By midnight, our living room looked like a war room. Police cars were parked outside our driveway for protection, while Ryan sat at his desk, analyzing every byte of data recovered from the memory card. It turned out the camera wasn't just recording local video; it was syncing to a cloud network managed by Arthur’s former law firm.

"Look at this timestamp, Sarah," Ryan called out, waving me over.

I sat beside him, holding a steaming mug of tea I had barely touched. On the screen was a directory containing hundreds of video files spanning the last eighteen months. It wasn't just footage of Sophie. There were recordings of private conversations, legal negotiations, and safety deposit box logbooks.

"Arthur wasn't just watching Sophie," I realized, the horror dawning on me. "He was using Melissa's apartment as a vault for illegal document backups."

"Worse," Ryan said, clicking on a folder labeled Trust Fund Reallocation. "He’s been embezzling from the family estate—money that was left in trust for Sophie and Chloe by my late mother. Over two million dollars. He used Melissa’s gambling debts to blackmail her into keeping quiet and housing his illegal server."

Sophie had stumbled upon the truth two weeks prior. She had been playing hide-and-seek with Chloe when she found a small key hidden inside a hollowed-out book on Melissa’s shelf. Curiosity led her to open a locked metal box in the closet, where she saw financial ledgers with her name printed on them in bold red letters. When Arthur found out she had seen them, he orchestrated a systematic campaign to isolate and scare her into silence, convincing her that speaking up would destroy her parents.

Suddenly, Ryan’s phone rang. It was an unknown number. He put it on speaker.

"Ryan," a voice rasped. It was Arthur. He sounded completely devoid of his usual commanding presence, replaced by a cold, calculating malice. "Delete that filing immediately. You are ruining this family over a minor misunderstanding about discipline."

"A misunderstanding?" Ryan’s voice was pure steel. "You locked my seven-year-old daughter behind two deadbolts in a room without water or air conditioning for three hours, Dad. You used her as a human bargaining chip to hide your fraud."

"She was meddling in things she didn't understand!" Arthur barked. "If those papers reach the grand jury, everything we built—the firm, the family legacy, your trust fund—is gone! Is that what you want?"

"I don't care about your legacy," Ryan said softly. "I care about my daughter. The police are on their way to your estate right now with a search warrant. Enjoy your legacy while it lasts."

Ryan ended the call before Arthur could respond.

Across the city, sirens began to blare. The facade of the prestigious Vance family was cracking, and the foundation was about to cave in completely.
