Chapter 10 - A New Beginning

One year later.

The summer breeze was warm and gentle as we celebrated Sophie’s eighth birthday in our backyard. The grass was green, decorated with colorful balloons, streamers, and a massive bouncy castle that Ryan had spent three hours setting up.

Laughter echoed throughout the neighborhood. School friends, neighbors, and Victoria were all gathered around the picnic tables, eating cake and drinking ice-cold lemonade.

Sophie stood at the head of the table, wearing a birthday crown made of sunflowers. Beside her stood Chloe, who had flourished over the past year, excelling in school and becoming inseparable from her cousin.

Ryan walked up behind me, wrapping his arms around my waist and resting his chin on my shoulder as we watched the children play.

"What are you thinking about?" he asked gently.

"About how far we’ve come," I replied, turning my head to kiss his cheek. "A year ago, we were living in a nightmare. Now... it feels like a bad dream that’s finally over."

"It is over," Ryan said firmly. "We built something real here. No secrets, no fear."

Sophie ran over to us, clutching her stuffed rabbit—the same one she had held tight on that terrifying afternoon a year ago. But today, the rabbit was wearing a tiny matching sunflower crown.

"Mommy, Daddy! Look!" Sophie giggled, pointing to the open sliding glass doors leading into the house. "Chloe and I made a fort in the living room, and we left all the doors wide open so everyone can come in!"

Ryan knelt down, hugging Sophie tight and lifting her high into the air as she squealed with delight.

"That’s the best fort ever, sweetheart," Ryan laughed.

As the sun began to set, casting a golden glow over our home, we gathered everyone around the cake. Sophie blew out her eight candles in one big breath, her face bright with joy and hope for the future.

The doors were open, the shadows were gone, and our family was finally whole, safe, and truly happy.
