Chapter 2 - The Hospital Shadow

The neon glow of Milbrook General Hospital cast long, sterile shadows across the emergency room waiting area. Rain pounded against the tall glass doors, mirroring the tempest tearing through Harrison Blackwell’s mind. Blood and wet mud crusted his tailored Italian trousers, but he refused the blanket a nurse had offered him. He sat motionless, his long fingers interwoven so tightly his knuckles turned stark white.

On the screen of his phone, Victoria’s name flashed once more.

14 missed calls.

He ignored every single one of them. For eight years, Victoria Vance—now Victoria Blackwell—had played the role of his ideal partner. She was poised, high-society, cold, and entirely focused on expanding their combined financial empire. Their marriage was a contract, a polished union forged to satisfy his ruthlessly ambitious father, Arthur Blackwell. Love had never been part of the terms.

"Mr. Blackwell?"

Harrison stood up instantly as Dr. Sarah Lin walked out of the trauma bay, removing her surgical cap. Her face was exhausted, but her eyes held a spark of relief.

"How is he?" Harrison’s voice was lower and raw, stripped of all corporate composure.

"Tyler suffered a severe laceration to his lower left calf and mild hypothermia, but the trap missed the main artery by less than a centimeter," Dr. Lin replied. "He’s stable. We’ve stitched the wound, given him warm fluids, and he’s resting comfortably in the pediatric ward. Arya is sitting right beside him, eating a graham cracker like a little champion."

Harrison let out a breath he felt he had been holding for seven years. "Can I see them?"

"They aren't technically allowed visitors outside immediate family, but..." Dr. Lin paused, looking closely at Harrison's disheveled state, then down at the striking green eyes they shared. "I think you belong in there."

When Harrison pushed open the door to Room 314, Arya was sitting on a low stool next to the high hospital bed. She was wearing an oversized pediatric gown, her golden-blond hair brushed out and damp. In the bed, three-year-old Tyler slept soundly, a faint pink returning to his pale cheeks.

Arya turned her head. When she saw Harrison standing in the doorway, her green eyes lit up. "Daddy!"

She scrambled off her stool and ran toward him without hesitation. Harrison dropped to one knee, ignoring the pain in his bruised legs, and caught her small body as she hurled herself into his arms. She smelled like baby shampoo and hospital soap, yet she felt so fragile, so unmistakably real.

"I sang the song," she whispered against his collarbone. "Just like you said."

"You saved him, Arya," Harrison choked out, burying his face in her hair. "You were so brave."

"Are you going to stay?" she asked softly, pulling back just enough to look into his eyes. "Mama always said you were super busy taking care of big things, but she said if we ever were in real trouble, you’d come."

Harrison felt a sharp, agonizing pang in his chest. Clare had told them about him?

Before he could process her words, the heavy wooden doors of the floor opened, and the sharp clack of designer high heels echoed down the hallway. Harrison stood up, placing a protective hand on Arya’s shoulder.

Victoria Blackwell stepped into the corridor, flanked by two of Blackwell Industries' top corporate attorneys. She wore an immaculate white trench coat, her dark hair pinned in a flawless chignon, her face a mask of restrained fury.

"Harrison," Victoria said, her voice dripping with poison as her eyes flicked down to Arya. "What is the meaning of this absolute disgrace? The board is in shambles. The merger with Vance Global is hanging by a thread, and you are hiding in a county hospital with street urchins?"
