Chapter 5 - The Legal Storm

Within forty-eight hours, the full weight of the Alden Foundation’s legal apparatus descended upon Blake Foster.

Arthur Vance and a team of forensic accountants moved with ruthless efficiency. They didn’t just freeze Blake’s access; they audited every financial transaction he had made over the past four years. They uncovered a web of unauthorized wire transfers, shell company invoices, and real estate purchases siphoned directly from the pediatric research trust to fund Marissa’s struggling clinic and their luxurious lifestyle.

I spent my days between Rosie’s ICU room—where her health was now steadily improving under the watchful eye of true specialists—and the foundation’s conference rooms, where I sat at the head of the table, reviewing documents, signing injunctions, and reclaiming control of my father’s legacy.

On the third day, Blake’s corporate employers suspended him pending an internal ethics investigation. Stripped of his authority, his status, and his illicit funding, Blake attempted to call me dozens of times a day. When I blocked his number, he sent frantic emails, pleading for a conversation, claiming he “did it all for our family’s future.”

I forwarded every single message directly to Arthur Vance to be added to the growing dossier for the civil and criminal proceedings.

In the hospital, Rosie finally opened her eyes fully, demanding her favorite strawberry juice and asking for her coloring books. When I handed her a fresh pack of crayons, she smiled—a bright, unfiltered smile that chased away the last lingering shadows of the nightmare we had survived.

“Mommy, can we stay here forever?” she asked playfully, sitting up against her hospital pillows.

“Not forever, sweet girl,” I said, kissing her nose. “Soon, we’re going home. To a new home. Just you and me.”
