Chapter 4 - The Confrontation at Home

By 3:00 AM, I was back at the hospital, ensuring Rosie had transitioned smoothly onto her next round of medication and that her vitals remained stable. Sarah gave me a reassuring thumbs-up from the nursing station, whispering that Rosie had slept peacefully for two hours.
Satisfied that my daughter was safe, I left two armed hospital security guards stationed outside her door and drove back to the house I had shared with Blake for eleven years.
The house was dark, save for the harsh glow of the kitchen recessed lighting.
When I unlocked the front door and stepped inside, the atmosphere was thick with tension. Blake was pacing the length of the hardwood living room floor, his hair disheveled, his tie discarded on the sofa. Marissa sat stiffly on the velvet armchair, clutching a glass of water, her face pale.
“Elena!” Blake shouted, spinning around as the door clicked shut behind me. “Are you out of your absolute mind? Do you have any idea what you’ve done? My corporate login is disabled, my corporate cards are declined, and federal investigators just contacted my office!”
I didn’t take off my coat. I stood in the entryway, looking at the man I had once believed was my protector.
“You stole from your own dying daughter, Blake,” I said, my voice cutting through his panic like a scalpel. “You thought you could hide behind my grief, drain my father’s trust, and hand it to your mistress while Rosie fought for oxygen.”
Marissa stood up abruptly, her voice defensive and shrill. “Elena, you don’t understand! Blake told me the trust was legally transferred! He said you wanted to invest in my clinic as a philanthropic gesture!”
“Quiet, Marissa,” Blake snapped, glaring at her before turning his furious gaze back to me. “You ruined everything, Elena. You were supposed to stay broken. You were supposed to stay in that hospital room crying while I managed the real world.”
“The real world?” I stepped forward into the light, my eyes locked onto his. “You live in a fantasy built on fraud and cowardice. You underestimated me because I chose to stay home with our child. You mistook my patience for weakness.”
I pulled a crisp stack of legal papers from my designer handbag and tossed them onto the glass coffee table between us.
“What is that?” Blake muttered, stepping closer.
“That is the immediate dissolution of our joint financial control, a freeze on all shared assets, and a notice of eviction from this property,” I said calmly. “This house was purchased using my father’s pre-marital real estate endowment. It is entirely in my name.”
Blake’s face drained of all color. “You can’t do that. We’re married. We have a life together!”
“We had an arrangement,” I corrected him. “And you broke it the moment you decided our daughter’s life was currency to buy your girlfriend a research lab.”
Marissa grabbed her designer handbag from the floor, her eyes wide with panic as she looked at Blake. “You told me she had no idea about the trust! You told me you controlled everything! I’m getting my lawyers involved, Blake. If my clinic gets dragged into a federal fraud investigation because of your lies, I will destroy you.”
“Marissa, wait—don’t listen to her!” Blake reached out, but Marissa flinched away from him, brushing past me with a look of pure disgust before storming out the front door, slamming it shut behind her.

The silence in the living room returned, heavier this time.
Blake slumped back against the sofa, his arrogance entirely evaporated, leaving only a pathetic, desperate man staring up at the wife he had tried to erase.
