Before we could fully close this chapter of our lives, there was one final piece of business. Brian wanted to ensure his family could never legally or financially entangle us again. He hired a reputable estate planning and family lawyer to draft a complete severance of any joint liabilities.
We officially removed Carol’s name as a secondary beneficiary from Brian's old life insurance policies—a detail he had forgotten to update from his early twenties. We established a strict ironclad trust for Ellie, ensuring that absolutely none of our assets could ever be accessed by extended family members under any circumstances.
The lawyer sent a formal cease-and-desist letter to Carol, George, and Janelle, stating that any further unannounced visits to our property, workplace, or Ellie's school would result in an immediate restraining order.
